Disclaimer: I obviously don't own squat!
It was nice talking to you tonight. Sleep well, Idol boy. David smiled as he read the text message. He was almost positive that he was blushing.
“Dude, you’re blushing,” Kyle said after he threw a pillow at him, “Boy’s don’t blush.”
David closed his phone and slipped it into his front pocket before grabbing the pillow and throwing it back at Kyle, “shut up Kyle.” And with that he got up and walked out of the living room and towards his room. He threw himself down on his bed not even bothering to change his clothes, fully content with sleeping in his jeans. He tried to fall asleep but couldn’t. He just couldn’t stop thinking of her. He pulled out his phone and reread some of the messages she had sent him.
You’re my guitar inspiration. I promise. This he truly didn’t believe, although she promised so he thought that maybe she was telling the truth.
You should come visit me on tour. I’ll show you around the digs. This got him over excited as he thought about being alone with her but then he realized he shouldn’t be this excited especially since they were just friends.
You’re going to be fine on tour; it’s not as bad as you would think. It’s not the same as the Idol tour, but it’s definitely fun. Trust me. This helped him to breathe, the stress from his upcoming tour was starting to weigh on him and she just helped make it all go away.
He thought that maybe she was flirting with him at times but then he reminded himself that she had a boyfriend, and cheating is a deal breaker for her she wouldn’t do it to him.
Mike’s a nice guy; I think you’d like him. He’s super funny! And he has a sister that I can try and hook you up with ;) This was his reality check. There’s no way that Carrie would be remotely interested in him. She was on a completely different level then him. It would just be too weird. But this didn’t keep him from thinking about her.
It didn’t take long for him to realize that she wasn’t really into him. He closed his phone and layed it down beside him. He rubbed his face and let out a deep breath he didn’t know he had been holding. “Come on Dave, think rationally, she has a boyfriend.” He told himself silently, but it still didn’t change anything. He was crushing on her.

“Who you talking to?” Matt asked as Carrie put her iPhone in the pocket of her Ed Hardy jacket.
“David,” she said grabbing a pillow and slumping down on the couch in her bus.
“Archuleta?”
Carrie giggled and shook her head, “Cook.”
“Ah, do the Idol winners have like some secret cult thing that no one else knows about?”
She laughed at Matt’s stupidness, “something like that yeah.”
“That’s pretty cool,” he nodded.
“I can’t believe the tour is almost over,” Carrie said with an exhale, “I’m gonna miss it.”
Matt nodded his head; “Yeah, only 2 weeks left and then we get a break.”
She let her head fall, “Yeah, I think I need one.”
“You of all people need one the most.” He agreed.
She nodded, “Yeah we’ll I’m going to go to sleep. Tonight was tiring.” She got up, picking up Ace before she did, “see you in the morning.”
“Yeah night Carrie.”
She walked to her bedroom on the bus and threw herself down on the bed, “Well Ace, in 2 weeks you and momma will be at home.” Ace rested his head down on her, “Yeah I miss it too.” She moved Ace over and got up and changed into something she could sleep in. She put her iPhone to charge, checking to see if he had called or texted her, nothing. She decided that she wasn’t going to wait for him and called him herself.
“Hello?”
“Hey you,” she said, the exhaustion clearly present in her voice.
“Hey I was just about to call you, you ok?”
She nodded her head and let out a yawn, “Yeah I’m just really tired, but I wanted to talk to you before I went to sleep.”
“How was the show tonight?”
“Good, I can’t wait to see you at tomorrow’s show though. I miss you,” she said laying down in her bed.
“Yeah, I miss you too, but listen about tomorrow, I don’t think I’m going to be able to make it, I hope you don’t mind.” He told her.
“But, I thought,”
“I know, just some unexpected things came up and I can’t-“ he said fading off at the end of his excuse.
“Ah, I see, well then,” she paused searching for the right words, “well you come when you can, and if I can’t see you tomorrow than I’ll see you some other day.” She smiled softly into the phone with tears almost welling up in her eyes, “Well I have to wake up early tomorrow, so I’ll see you when I see you.”
“Please don’t be mad Carrie,” He tried.
“I’m not mad Mike,” she told him, “I’m not mad,” she said softer.
“Alright then, you get some sleep beautiful, Sleep with the angels.”
“You too,” she said before quickly hanging up the phone. She was afraid that her and Mike were breaking, she hoped she was wrong but something told her that soon enough her heart would be in pieces.
She woke up not knowing where she was; she realized that the bus wasn’t moving so that meant either one of two things. They either arrived in Toronto or they ran out of gas, she hoped for the former. She looked at her phone and noticed it was almost 11 in the morning, and she had about 7 new text messages. She hoped that maybe one of them was from Mike telling her that he could make it to the concert tonight after all but was sadly disappointed when none of them were from her hockey-playing boyfriend. She yawned as she read her messages and smiled when she got to the last one.
Hey Idol Girl, hope you had a good nights rest. I couldn’t really sleep all that much, I guess I had a lot on my mind. Anyway, I decided that I’m going to take you up on your offer and go visit you on tour next week when you’re in Nashville J Good morning, btw.
She smiled as she texted him back telling him to stay relaxed so that he could sleep and that she was looking forward to seeing him. She had a smile on her face when she walked into the main area of her bus.
“For someone who is usually not a morning person you look mighty chipper today,” Matt said as he sat at the table eating cheerios, “Hey Ann called she said that the People’s Choice Awards is going to need you to decide on what you’re going to sing.”
“She nodded, I slept good I guess, and I don’t even know yet. That’s still like a month away. I can’t plan something like that too far ahead, do I have a deadline?”
“Yeah the 26th I believe.”
“Oh well then I’ll be good.”
“So when is Mike getting here?” Matt questioned.
She shook her head, “He’s not coming he said he had something unexpected come up.”
“Like what?”
Carrie shrugged her shoulders, “didn’t ask.”
“Well that’s lame.”
She nodded in agreement, “Yeah, but David’s coming to our Nashville show, I promised I’d show him around the digs.”
“That’ll be show number….4?”
She smiled, “Something like that yeah,”
“That’s one dedicated fan.” Man said sarcastically.
“I know, I’m really excited for his tour so I can be a fangirl.” She said laughing.
Matt laughed, “and what does Mike think of this?”
Carrie stopped and pondered for a bit, “I don’t know we haven’t really talked about David, I mean I’ve talked to David about Mike but not to Mike about David. I don’t really see it as a huge problem. David and I are friends, we both won Idol, and we both are in the music industry. So me being friends with him shouldn’t cause World War III. There are much worst things that I could be doing.”
Matt held up his hands in defense, “Hey it was just a simple question, no need to get all crazy on me.”
Carrie stuck out her tongue at her long time friend and went back to her room on the bus to get ready for the day.
The days flew by and before she new it she was in Nashville. The tour had only day’s left and Carrie was exhausted as she walked out of the arena and towards her bus she noticed a note taped to the door and roses on the floor. She smiles softly as she read the note and went inside her bus.
“Surprise!” He yelled happily with his arms stretched out.
Carrie jumped back in shock, “Mike, what are you doing here?”
He dropped his shoulders, “I came to visit, I felt bad about missing your last show in Canada so I decided to make it up to you. Who are those from?” he asked pointing to the roses
Carrie shook her head and placed the roses on the table next to Mike, “Just a fan,” she pulled him into a hug, “I’m glad you came.” She leaned into kiss him when someone knocked on the door. She laughed lightly as she dropped her head onto his chest, “Of course. Come in!” She yelled.
“Surprise!” David said as he swung open the door, “Oh crap. Sorry.” He said noticing Carrie with her arms around a man he presumed to be her boyfriend.
“David!” She yelled turning around and jumping into his arms “You came!”
“I promised,” he said bashfully, grabbing his cheeks to hide the fact that he was blushing. “Um look I didn’t mean to interrupt, I’ll just…” He pointed back towards the door, which was still open.
“No! Nonsense!” Carrie said shaking her head walking past him to close the door. “Sit down please.” She motioned to David. She moved the blanket and her jeans that were thrown on the couch and put Ace’s toys in their proper place, “Excuse the mess the tour is so close to finishing I just haven’t gotten the nerve to clean anything, I’m usually a clean freak but I don’t want to let this one go.” She said looking at the two men in her bus. She noticed Mike didn’t look too pleased, in fact he looked hurt, mad, and about ready to rip off David’s head. So she casually walked over to him and kissed his cheek, “I’m really happy you came too,” she whispered to him. He only smiled and nodded his head.
“So… Carrie.” David said from the couch not wanting to break their cuteness up but he was becoming jealous and wasn’t sure he could contain himself if he had to watch them any longer. “I see you got the roses.” He said motioning towards the red flowers that lay on the table.
She could have sworn she heard Mike scoff at the question, so she nodded and politely answered, “Yeah they’re beautiful, Thanks David.”
Things grew silent for a while, and to everyone’s dismay it wasn’t a pleasant silence, but an awkward ‘what next’ silence. Until it suddenly registered in Carrie’s head that she hadn’t introduced everyone yet, “Oh gosh, I’m incredibly rude! Mike this is David he won American Idol like me, and David this is my boyfriend Mike.”
David gulped at the word boyfriend, but stood up and shook his hand all together, “Nice to meet you man.”
Mike nodded, “Yeah, you too”
David scratched his head and rocked back and forth on the heels of his feet, another awkward silence. “So… you play hockey right?”
Mike nodded, “Yeah, Toronto Senators, are you a fan?”
David shock his head and chuckled, “No, but who knows maybe I will?”
“It’s a great sport,” Make told him.
Carrie nodded, “Yeah you um,” she swallowed, “should maybe go to one of Mike’s games, I was thinking of taking the band with me to see one of them, maybe you’ll want to come?”
David nodded his head, “Sure, I don’t see why not.”
Carrie smiled, “Sweet.”
“So do you have a girlfriend?” Mike asked receiving a glare from Carrie.
David laughed, “No, I don’t actually, its hard to really find someone in this field, Not that Carrie seems to be having that problem, looks like she has a great man on her arm.” David said, feeling the tension in the room begin to build up.
“You guys want anything to drink? I have tons of VitaminWater, benefits of being sponsored.” She asked quickly before Mike could make any comments.
Both guys shook their heads no, “Actually you know I’m kinda hungry so I’m just gonna,” he pointed to the door again, “Book it. But I’ll see you tonight Carrie, on stage!” He added quickly hoping the boyfriend wouldn’t think anything was going on, “I’ll see you tonight on stage. You um, you kick some butt up there even though I’m sure I don’t have to tell you that since you always do.” He said smiling, and blushing, he was positive he was blushing again. “Well it was nice meeting you Mike, good luck with the season, don’t uh, lose any teeth,” he said laughing at his own joke until he noticed that Mike wasn’t laughing and Carrie had her hand over her mouth to keep herself from laughing, “That, that was a joke. I’m gonna go. Bye Idol girl.” He mentally slapped himself for using the nickname as he left her bus. Hoping he hadn’t caused any drama.
“That was interesting, Idol girl” Mike said turning to Carrie.
She laughed, “Yeah Dave is,” she paused and thought about what to say and couldn’t help but notice her heart rate pick up a little, “He’s a good guy. He has a lot of potential.”
“Shouldn’t he be on tour? I mean aren’t musician’s always on tour?” He asked bitterly.
“Not always, we have to record our music before we can sing it” she said almost hurt by his words, “What are you trying to get at Mike?”
“I’m just saying what was he doing here? Shouldn’t he be working our something? Making music with his boy band?”
Carrie scoffed, insulted by his comment, “he’s not in a boy band, and he promised me he would come and see my concert tonight and unlike you he actually keeps his promises.” She said it faster than she thought it, “oh Mike I’m sorry that sounded bad, just forget I said it.”
Mike looked her in the eyes, “why are you defending him? Why are you chosing him over me?”
She shook her head, “I haven’t chosen anyone, you’re over reacting,”
“You’re doing it again,” he said walking past her.
“You don’t understand, we’re friends! No more than what me and Matt are ok?”
He shook his head, “I shouldn’t have come,” he said walking past her again towards the door.
“No wait! Mike stop!” she said grabbing his arm, “Don’t leave I don’t want you to leave, please just, lets sit down, I haven’t seen you in months.” She looked into his blue eyes pleading for him to just listen, “Please. Stay.”
He bit the inside of his bottom lip, “Ok” he whispered, “I’ll stay.”
She nodded and got up on her tippy toes to gently kiss him, “Thank you.”
David exited the bus quietly closing the door behind him, “Slick move Dave” he told himself softly, He looked up to see about 20 fans sitting by the gates that border the area around the busses. “Woah.” He said amazed that fan’s would show up to a concert almost 4 hours before the actual concert just to catch a glimpse of the country queen. David smiled and thought of how awesome it must be to have amazing fans like that, “That’s my girl.” He whispered but quickly shook the thought out of his head and started walking to the few fans that were calling his name. He signed autographs for about 20 minutes and wished everyone a good show. When the fans asked if Carrie was in her bus and if he could get her to come out all he said was “She’s actually busy, but I’m sure I can find a way to get her out here. Give me a couple minutes.” He told them winking at the young girl that her almost dropped to her knees begging him.
In the 20 minutes that Dave was outside signing autographs Matt had reappeared on the bus, much to Carrie’s delight, things were getting awkward with Mike and she needed a breath of fresh air. The guys were talking about hockey, Carrie hearing them but not really paying attention started to think about the show ahead of her that night. She was in Nashville, which meant a huge crowd probably filled with normal fans, obsessive fans, and celebrity fans. Just then her phone vibrated on the side table. She reached to get it and smiled when she saw who it was. “I’ll be right back,” she said leaning into kiss Mike on the cheek, “Duty calls.” She stepped outside her bus and was greeted by more than just two fans screaming. It was more like 40 fans now. She walked over to them and started signing autographs and taking pictures, she looked over her shoulder and noticed David laughing at her as he leaned against her bus. When she was finished she walked over to him, “Two fans huh?”
He shrugged his shoulders playfully; “Well when I came out there was about 20 less, so that makes about 20ish fans which still has the number two in it so technically I just stretched the truth.” He told her, content with his use of sarcasm and logic.
She laughed, “That made no sense, and yet it made sense.” She stood in front of him, shielding the sun from her eyes.
“Here,” he said grabbing her hips and spinning them around so that she was leaning against the bus and he was facing the sun, “Better?”
She nodded, “Much, thank you.”
He let go of her hips and stuffed his hands in his pockets, “Sorry about the whole thing with Mike, I wouldn’t have come if I knew he was going to be here.”
She shook her head and waved of the notion that he had done something wrong, “Its alright, He owes me one.” She tried to act like it was no big deal but on the inside she was completely torn. She felt bad that Mike felt like he was being shunned, but she was so happy to see David, she just couldn’t help it.
“So he doesn’t hate me?” he asked trying to lighten the mood
She thought about it for a second, making and adorable face as she did so, causing David to laugh a little, “No yeah, I think he still might hate you, but he’ll get over it. Hate isn’t his thing.”
“Ah well that’s good.” David acknowledged.
There was a moment of silence with just the two of them staring into each others eyes, David’s heart was racing, he wanted to pull her close and hug her, anything to be with her, to make her feel better about things. He probably could have to but the moment quickly passed when Carrie’s phone started beeping.
She reached into her pocket, “That’s my cue. I should go, I have to start getting ready.”
He smiled and nodded, “Alright, I’ll see you on stage.”
“Yeah,” she paused again. Then she did something that caught David off guard, she pulled him into a tight hug, fisting the back of his shirt and wrapping her other arm clear around his waist, “Thanks so much for coming David. I really appreciate it.”
Without letting her go he whispered into the crook of her neck smelling her coconut scented perfume, “Anything for you Idol Girl.”
She laughed and pulled away, “Bye idol boy, I’ll see you after the show we’re having an after party that you’re invited to.”
“Cool. I’ll be there.”
“Good, I want you there.” She winked, waved at the fans one last time, and headed off towards her bus to prepare for her show.
When she was out of site David exhaled deeply not realizing that he was holding his breath, “well, this should be fun.” He told himself before turning around and getting into his rental car and exiting the venue to go grab something to eat.
