I was thinking of trying a hunter, but would want to do it without the pet croaking either (there aren't any frog combat pets are there?)

I don't think it's possible to do it without the pet dying, but I believe some folks are going out and taming a new pet when the current one dies, rather than using Revive. And no, no frog combat pets that I can think of.
