Measuring goodness the WoW way

This is a post about my health, and about two specific bits of progress measured via MMO.

An expansion back (in Wrath of the Lich King), World of Warcraft added the Argent Tournament. This was a place for characters of both Horde and Alliance to take on a variety of challenges to build up the expertise needed to face the Lich King and not get turned ( Read more... )

My first attempts at jousting failed miserably and I just couldn't get into it. That was also around the time I was burning myself out by doing the transcontinental "go find a sword" dailies as well, but I just couldn't make the mechanics mesh with my brain. I ended up taking a break from WoW entirely and came back some months later. Once I did, I found that with some advice I was able to handle the jousting. Could even do the tournament five-person instance with the required jousting.

This sort of thing happens to me fairly frequently, actually.

Yeah, I had a moment of thinking "this is the sort of thing that happens to someone else". :)

I just realized that my migraines stopped being frequent around the time I stopped playing WoW. And that my last really severe migraine (actually a cluster headache) was during the same month I was pushing to defeat the Lich King.

I don't know if there's any causation to go with that correlation, though. I thought it might have had to do with the brand of CFL I was using, but maybe not.

Good news! Do you have any theories about why you're no longer getting a migraine from that screen?

I really don't, no, beyond a guess that another year of taking my diabetes meds may have helped.

Plus having been married to a chronic migraine suffer a lot of the triggers are cumulative. "I can do X or Y or Z, but combine any two and I'm down for the day."

Glad to hear your health and life are improving.

That's an interesting insight, and one that I keep forgetting, to boot. Thanks for the reminder.

Ya gotta enjoy the small joys and victories where ya get 'em. :-) Glad to hear a couple new areas of the game have opened up for you!

That jousting IS tricky. I was able to get to where I could do the dailies but I never managed to get on what you'd call cruise control...

Sad/glad to hear this, Bruce. If you have more trouble with video-driven migraines, there are some tools for fiddling with the colors delivered to the screen that might help. I'm most familiar with Nvidia, but there's probably several Radeon wranglers on your Flist.
