With huge thanks to trygve, I made it to the bike ride yesterday. All in all, pretty enjoyable, though riding with a large group can really slow one down...

Re: the numbness... It's a problem with mountain bikes and hybrids that
a lot of people have. This weekend after paddling most of saturday my
entire hands were going numb on the bike. It's almost like you have to
have the perfect alignment. I think I need to get some of those
handlebar ends for my bike if I'm going to keep doing distance rides (as
well as get it refit/adjusted for me 'cuase I think maybe my seat is too
high for the handlebars or something...)

Yeah, the finger numbness is a hazard. You have to be careful where on your palms you rest your weight, because after a while it's pretty easy to irritate the ulnar nerve. I've had that problem as well, I think it's part of why that style of bike isn't as good for long distances.

I see. That link mentions doing hand stretches, but doesn't provide much enlightenment on which would be good... you happen to have another reference for relief? ;-)

The numbness comes from irritation and inflammation of the ulnar nerve, so like most inflammation, you can help it go away with some ibuprofen.
