I Hate Alcohol

I fucking hate it.

I fucking hate it.

I fucking hate it.

Alcohol. Ethanol. Ethyl alcohol. C2H5OH (or C2H6O). Words cannot express how much I despise what it has become in our culture. When people say "I don't do drugs, I just drink" it makes me want to vomit. Drinking alcohol is on the same level as huffing computer duster. InTOXICation mean anything ( Read more... )

Bryce, I will humor you for a moment, but only because you told me I should. I have a feeling this will be a futile effort. The only context in which I can make a case for alcohol is the purely cultural scenario of dining. There are some foods that are simply not as good when separated from the complement of a perfect Cabernet Sauvignon or Pinot Noir or Merlot. My case? Fine wine tastes good with fine food. It heightens that particular experience in a way that no other substance can. Thus, some alcohol can be good sometimes in some contexts, and consequently, the substance cannot be characterized as bad overall.

Silly, wine consumed in small to moderate amounts falls under the category of FOOD that's shitty for you, not DRUGS that are shitty for you.

(Yes, wine and alcohol in general consumed in small amounts do have some health benefits as well. Don't even start.)

I'm speaking of alcohol as a drug, not referring to food products that happen to contain alcohol. However, even in small doses, it's still a burden on your liver (though easily detoxifiable) and body (but the more mild free radical increase can by stymied) and still plenty of empty calories. In fact, arguably, the actual ethanol in wine degrades the wine experience, as one has to get past the alcoholic assault on one's taste buds before tasting the actual chemicals formed through the fermentation process.

In any case, fine wine is an indulgence, most of the above doesn't apply to it at those levels, and few people are drinking the ethanol for the taste.
