Trek: At A Loss

What I find most infuriating about the new Star Trek movie is not that it was bad or a waste of my 2 hours 6 minutes. No, what drives me nuts is that so many other people liked it, which means that I'm horribly out of touch. See, for me, this wasn't a close thing and hardly even a matter of taste. The writing was bad, the plot was neither ( Read more... )

I haven't seen the new Trek yet, but is is possible that your expectations were so high that no matter what you saw, it wouldn't have been good enough? I noticed that a lot of people had that problem with the final episode of BSG. These things are supposed to be entertaining. Relax and enjoy it.

To me, it's like being given free ice cream. It might not be my favorite flavor, or it might have a topping I don't like, but it's ice cream. I'll probably find some redeeming quality and enjoy it. It's possible it's not worth eating, but my ice cream standards are pretty reasonable.

Except I paid for that ice cream!

I didn't have to be blown away, I just didn't want to think it was awful. I guess if nothing else I'll lower everyone's expectations and they'll like it better as a result.

I hear you, especially if you paid Saturday night prices.

I'm really surprised you feel it was awful. I've heard both extremes from people who have seen it, so maybe it's mainly a binary decision. Very few friends have had a reaction in the middle.

Maybe that's what's really bothering me- people are just gushing about something that was at best nothing special. It's not that it had no redeeming qualities.

It's dumb as a bag of socks and has a really disquieting misogyny streak lurking in there for good measure, but what it does well it does extremely well. It's lovely spectacle and the cast is simply marvelous; I never would have expected Zachary Quinto to hold his own with Leonard Nimoy, but he does just that.

I enjoyed it, but I can honestly understand reactions on either extreme; it's all a matter of what bits of the movie really stood out for you, for good or ill.

I liked it a lot, but you're hardly the only person I've heard who disliked it.
