This problem has been around for quite some time. I remember a drama teacher making a point of it back in high school when at least two of the cast had that speech impediment.

Strangely enough, I never did. But then a certain amount of verbal conviction was necessary in my family if you wanted to get a word in edgewise.

:)

For me, his poetry-rant (poetierade?) seemed less about the "proper English must be X" and more about meaningless filler and stating something as if one actually believes it. The creative way that he ranted against not really stating an opinion (or weakening it significantly) by speaking as if one's statement is up for grabs ("I'll only believe this really strongly if you are OK with me believing it strongly, preferably you will also already believe it.") really caught me and challenged me. I tend to be very afraid that if I state something strongly, someone else will feel that I am telling them they are wrong for not feeling the same way and heaven forfend I should cause discomfort in any way to anyone, whether or not I could be actually responsible for another's reaction to my opinion!!! *ahem ( ... )

Oh, and there is another video of one of his poetierades around his response as a teacher to a lawyerspeaker condescendingly asking him "what do you make?" Of course, the question was about salary, but the rant is priceless.
