Heh. That could also read "was Mahler." The piece is the 'Gurre-Lieder.' It is massive (It doesn't quite call for the 380 musicians that are doing it here in Aspen {originally it called for 4 harps, we have 7, It's kind of silly.} and was written (developed?) during the period in which he was moving towards atonality. It is in a class of 'huge' that is occupied by very few works. Mahler's 8th is one of the others. Fun stuff. I'd recommend listening to it if that kind of work appeals to you at all.
I think I'm still working my way up to appreciating that kind of massive, instead of just finding it silly or utterly overwhelming.
Lately, Brahams has been ringing my bell.
Please let us know what you're performing in a little further in advance. I'm guessing I'm not the only one would be interested in attending. (Though, admittedly, Aspen is a little out of the way.)
Title of piece included in case you didn't guess what we were doing. :) You aren't kidding! It's hard not to completely blow my voice by oversinging. There is so much sound at times. I had never heard of the work (it isn't done very often, for obvious reasons), but it now occupies a permanent place on the iPod.

I have not heard this variation of Schoenberg.

After "It's kind of silly.}" should have read "and is 110 minutes long.)"
