I also had the image of Janine trying to bond with Claudia by telling her about articles about chocolate she read because she thinks talking about that might interest Claudia. --And the sad thing is Janine's gonna be shut down even if she goes to Claudia about a topic that interests CLAUDIA

Of course, I can get pissed off at the dumbest shit imaginable.--After I typed up what I said above, I got to thinking about the other side of the coin. I want to believe that the girls are being supportive because Claudia's their friend. That's it, end of story. But the nice behavior seems out of character. I wonder if the nice behavior is covering up a panic setting in? 'If Claudia doesn't do better in school, her parents might force her to drop the club. And then we'd have to find a new headquarters. Better be supportive and try to help her with anything she needs help with

That's what I don't understand. The Kishi parents aren't written as being deadbeats that don't give a shit about Claudia or Janine! It's not like they're saying "Susie, come over here." "Susie's not my name, it's Claudia." I don't understand the missing homework assignments. I've been reading a lot of old snarks lately--did Claudia blow off turning in homework in 7th grade during the early part of the series. How does that work? Is Claudia bullshitting her parents? "I've already done all my homework

Repeating the grade you're in will be ordered at the end of the year. In the middle of the year, like this book would be, they'd send you back a grade instead of having you sit there the rest of the year.

Right it would be at the end of the year. During the school year parents, teachers, etc. would be warning the student say Claudia that if her grades don't improve she'd have to repeat the eighth grade. I guess that's the downside of having characters who all keep repeating the same grade it means nothing if Claudia's repeating the same grade with her entire class.
But I wondered if Claudia has ever considered that she'd be held back because of her grades and never turning in assignments? Most of us have guessed that after the series ends Claudia ends up repeating the eighth grade. Has that ever occurred to her? She blows off school work, homework assignments all of it. She doesn't think that could get her held back? Does she not know that could get her held back?
If it's mid-year, being sent back a year does happen. It's a better use of the student's time at school than to cajole them for half the year. Going back lets them reinforce what they learned in those last months to prepare for starting the year over. I've known more kids who were sent back grades id-year than kids who were told at the end of the year that they were going to have to repeat the year.
Claud says she doesn't fail tests much, which makes me think that she'd pass just fine (at least with D's) if she just did her homework. I'm pretty floored that her parents are letting her continue all her activities when she's not doing her homework. Mine would have put the kibosh on activities if I didn't have any good reason for getting C's.
Rosa tells Claudia she sucked at school, too. Claudia is shocked because Janine said Rosa was the smartest student in the class. Rosa says school doesn’t come naturally, so she has to work hard to do well.
This was me. School was hard because I was so advanced (I'm not just saying this--I was tested in high school, thrown in the higher level classes, and then it was decided that I was "too young," and so put back in my grade level's classes, and in elementary school, was sent to the higher classes) that focusing was hard. So I ad to work my ass off to make myself focus. It sucked.
Do her teachers not tell their students ways to remember certain things?
Claudia hasn't bothered to train herself to remember what she doesn't care about.
It’s still an F. Okay, so I’m not sure if it’s an improvement.
It's an improvement. Going up another tenth would be passing.
But Mrs. Kishi said they didn’t realize how badly Claudia was doing in the last chapter. Claudia has never done well in school. Her parents hold a lot of blame here.
