I don’t know why I find that funny, but I do.--It made me smile. Just seems like a realistic angle for something to happen and the character's implied to say a curse word instead of "BULLFROGS ( ... )

Oh Lordy. This book. Even when I was a kid, I thought the adults were incredible idiots.

Dawn says that her parents’ divorce was traumatic and so was moving to a completely new environment in the middle of the school year.

Sharon is a self-centered idiot for making her kids move in the middle of the year when a divorce is new, and she was VERY obviously doing the judge some favors to get the judge to allow that. In real life, California doesn't, even then, allow the custodial parent to move a kid states away without either the non-custodial parent approving, the non-custodial parent being dead, or a judge deciding it's in the very best interest of a child, such as the custodial parent can't find work where they are, but gets a very good job offer elsewhere.

We know Sharon wasn't hurting for money when she moved since she went from being an at-home home in California to being able to buy a house like she was buying milk all the way across the country. She was just selfish in not thinking about the needs of her kids.

At least Jenny doesn’t make up bullshit stories and barge into her neighbor’s house and accuse her of being a witch.

You don't want to know the bullshit story one of the neighbor kids here is making up about my child.

Claudia asks Mallory to be her partner because apparently the Pikes spend a lot of time on the water and love boating. Since when?

That might be a reference to the poor Pike family's yearly vacation to Sea City.

Was it legal for an eleven year old, an eight-year old, and a baby to be left alone for the weekend in 1990?

Absolutely not. When I read this book, I asked my parents why I couldn't stay home for the weekend, and they told me it wasn't legal because I wasn't old enough. I asked one of my teachers who said the same thing.

Even NOW, kids are supposed to be 16 to "be left unsupervised (in some cases, for up to two consecutive overnight periods)". So an 11-year-old for three days...nope.

I think in the ninth book Sharon was dating someone other than Richard

Chip?

Can’t you get caught in a riptide $ ( ... )

I thought pneumonia was really serious. Or have they made medical advances so that it’s not a big deal anymore?

Pneumonia is one of the leading causes of death in the US. I wish there would be cause to call CPS on Mrs. Newton, but since he doesn't have pneumonia yet, there's nothing they can do. If he needed to go to the ER because he had pneumonia that badly, but instead put him on a boat, AND then something happened, CPS might be able to intervene. It's amazing how much medical neglect a kid can suffer before it's criminal.

Anyway, the sky starts getting dark and a storm is coming. Dawn and Claudia know this means trouble and wonder what to do.

Question why NO ONE thought to check the forecast.

Oh, Dawn would be an activist. But she'd be one of those PETA members who does shit like form a lobster empathy center or try to convince people not to eat honey because it exploits the labor of bees.

I’m pretty sure the BSC has labeled a child being cranky because they’re sick as a brat.
I recall Jessi once became convinced a kid was racist because she was grumpy about breaking her leg and missing out on the fun in the snow her friends were having.

The Pikes doing things in the water would make some sense, with their regular vacations in Sea City. Not the biggest stretch.

Neither is the Ramsays agreeing to Becca going on the trip -- they see nothing wrong with letting an 11-year-old watch two younger siblings for a three-day weekend, so letting a 13-year-old take one kid on a boat isn't much worse.
