It's nice to have a mostly-sympathetic Karen for a change. She didn't ask for a bunny, she just did her best to work with the limited knowledge of rabbits she had to care for it. She tried to learn more about rabbit care to do a better job, and was willing to admit she was in over her head and accepting of the idea of finding a home for the bunnies where they could be better cared for. It seems simple enough when reading, but when you're holding a warm and cuddly creature that snuggles up to you I imagine it'd be a lot harder.
The other part . . . I think Karen got infected with BSCitis, whatever it is in the Stonybrook water supply that makes children think they need to take care of anyone younger than them and organize things that don't need organizing. Admit it, taking over the food drive and play are totally things Kristy would do. Though Kristy would probably organize her own food drive and clear every pantry in town of expired pumpkin pie filling while getting Claudia to paint sets for Andrew's play.
Lisa mentions that they previously had a new puppy that they didn't keep because it was too much trouble.
Encouraging irresponsible pet-ownership...FTW?
Puppies are trouble. They're PUPPIES. Don't get them in the first place if you don't want to deal with that!!
Karen is surprisingly mature
Who slipped her some chill-pills?
The pet store won't take the rabbits because they have too many other pets that were given as pets in Easter baskets and didn't work out.
My local Humane Society will have an influx in "found" rabbits, though, to be fair to some of the people bringing them in, a lot of people do set them loose. So some might really be found.

Which turns a lesson on altruism into a project for self-gain.
It's like when the teacher asks for a three page paper, and someone comes in with ten pages. I was that kid. Because of me, some of my teachers began putting upper page limits on assignments. To be fair to me, though, I did so much not to beat other

If you're going to give an animal as an Easter gift, or any gift, educate yourself about the animal first!--Exactly. I feel for the animals that are stuck in the middle of this kinda shit. I bet it happens quite often irl. If you feel like you just HAVE to get your kid something for a holiday, let it be a stuffed toy animal. At least a real animal won't suffer because the cuteness or fun of it all wore off by the next week

Andrew says they don't fit but Karen freaking insists that he wear them anyway and safety pin them.--Why isn't Andrew going to Lisa or Seth for this? There's no damn way I'd wear something that might possibly fall down because they don't fit. And this is why you shouldn't involve her, Andrew. The kid doesn't listen. She's a 7 year old know it all. Even if Andrew's humiliated, it won't matter to her. She's just happy because her ego went up another size or two

Every year, tons of people buy bunnies for Easter without thinking it through. Humane Societies constantly beg people not to do this for the exact reason we see in this book.
I think Karen is worse than Claudia. Not to defend Claudia being a bitch to her sister, but Claudia is snotty toward Janine out of insecurity more than anything. She feels she doesn't live up. To my recollection, Janine has never told Claudia to leave her alone, and neither of them force unwanted "help" on each other. Andrew can tell Karen he wants to do something on his own, but Karen won't listen. She has no respect for what he says. She doesn't care if she makes Andrew cry as long as she gets her way in the end. Claudia wouldn't be okay with making Janine cry.
