Kristy's Book- Part 1

Mar 11, 2017 17:07

Hey guys! Time for another autobiography book snark, this time Kristy! She is slightly more bearable to read about than Dawn, but still pretty up there. Still, I remember really liking her book when I was little. It was more interesting than Dawn's, to say the least. Hope you enjoy!

Chapter 1

It's the typical chapter opening of these portrait collections. It's the weekend before the autobiographies are due and Kristy is cramming in time to work on it.

I still think this assignment is ridiculous for eighth graders, but whatever.

Of course Kristy's work is interrupted by Karen. I feel like Kristy has it worse than everyone who has to write this because she lives in a home with such interruptions. Good thing Mallory never had to do it. Damn, she would never even get it done. I was thinking of "Mallory on strike" and how she couldn't work on her story because her siblings couldn't wipe up their own spills. If she had to write her autobiography, forget it. It would be depressing anyway, probably entitled "the Life of a Slave" or "Being a Mother at age eleven."

Anyway, that was extremely off topic. I guess by way of avoiding Karen since I snarked this book specifically to take a break from snarking a book that was not narrated by Karen, and here she is on page 1.

Anyway, she bursts into Kristys room and races under her bed, hiding from someone.

Then Andrew comes in dressed as Batman, saying he's looking for the Joker (Karen.)

Then Elizabeth comes in, looking for Sam. She needs a babysitter as usual, and is actually being courteous to Kristy by not asking her when she needs to work on her project. Although, coming in and bothering her while she's working doesn't exactly help her stay focused. Anyway, Kristy is missing a Krushers practice to work on this so you know it's legitimate.

Then, Nannie, Emily, and Shannon the dog come in. Obviously Nannie is caring for Emily. I am just going to say she is Emily's mother since Elizabeth is rarely seen caring for her.

Forget what I said about Elizabeth being courteous. She asks Kristy to babysit when she JUST SAID she has to work on her homework. Although, to be fair, at least in my eyes, babysitting does not necessarily require entertaining the kids, especially when it's your own siblings. I never understand why jessi, mal, and Kristy are always planning elaborate activities when they are watching their own siblings. Like you're all at home. Do what you would normally do and just make sure you are watching to make sure the kids stay safe and help them if they need food or something. So technically Kristy could really stay home with the kids and work on her project, but since this is a BSC book and kids need to be constantly entertained by their babysitters, this isn't going to happen.

Then Charlie comes in and sits ON KRISTY'S NOTEBOOK. Okay, then.

Kristy again says she's trying to do her project and Elizabeth is like "well I need to figure out what to do with the kids, yo" JUST LEAVE THEM WITH KRISTY WHILE SHE DOES HER WORK. Have them entertain themselves. As long as someone is home it's no big deal. Adults often do their own thing while they're home with their kids. Why should this be any different?

Elizabeth asks Charlie but he isn't free either. Then Elizabeth seriously asks Kristy again. How many times can Kristy say she has to do her work? Holy shit.

Kristy thinks of what the other sitters are doing that weekend. Don't they all have autobiographies to work on too? Unless maybe each teacher assigns it at a different time and they have different teachers. That's the only explanation because none of their plans seem to include that. Or maybe they all finished theirs already but I doubt Claudia would have.

I kind of love how Kristy keeps tabs on all their schedules and knows exactly what they are all doing. She remembers Mary Anne is free but Elizabeth asks Kristy to call her, because she hasn't said 200 times that she is busy. She also hasn't encouraged everyone to get the fuck out of kristys room and instead is lying on her bed.

Anyways, Kristy calls Mary Anne and she says she can babysit. It seems so silly to pay her when Kristy is home, but whatever.

Kristy looks around at everyone intruding in her room. Karen has surprisingly stayed quiet under the bed this whole time. Charlie looks through the pictures Kristy has gathered for her autobiography and finds one of them when they were little and with their dad. This is one reason why I like kristys book because reading about her dad is interesting, even though he is an asshole.

Elizabeth finally seems to absorb that Kristy needs everyone out so she can do her autobiography and she calls everyone out.

Anyways, Kristy is finally alone and thinks about how her family and the Babysitters Club lead to a lovely cast of characters in her life. Characters in her cult, who obey her command.

Chapter 2-

Kristy titles her story "Thirteen years in the life of Kristin Amanda Thomas" and the first part is called "The first five innings." This is actually a really cute title!

Elizabeth went into labor with Kristy at Yankee stadium while at a game with Patrick (Kristy's dad. I don't know why I remember his name.) It is cute how she ends up a big sports fan after this. Kristy's dad was a sportswriter which I never knew. Anyway, Liz goes into labor right at the start of the game and we get our first glimpse of how much of a jerk Patrick is because when Elizabeth says they should go to the hospital, he's just like, "The baby won't be born for a while let's stay here." Priorities, people.

Elizabeth spends the game counting the time between her contractions and finally insists her asshole husband get her to the hospital at the 8th inning. She calls him Patrick, and yes! I knew that was his name!

They go to the hospital and listen to the game on the way, which the Yankees win. Our future cult leader is born and there's a cute birth announcement that is designed like a baseball card.

Kristy says: "Like most people I don't remember being a baby."

Most people? Does anyone? I mean people may have memories from being like a year old but does anyone remember being a newborn?

Kristy was apparently a very active baby which I am sure the ghostie is using to allude to her being an athlete later on. Elizabeth never made Kristy a baby book. I feel like most parents try to make a baby book for their kids, but I could be wrong. And I suppose she was probably busy having three kids and a probably not very attentive husband.

There's a baby pic of Kristy, and it's kind of creepy.

We get some talk of Kristy's milestones, including her first steps which were towards a ball that Charlie and Sam were throwing and was really more of a run than a walk. Her first memory is being thrown up in the air by her dad which is bittersweet.

"Since I am a person who is known for her brilliant ideas, I've been wondering when I started having them." Lol, sorry Kristy, but your ideas are not that great. They mostly involve putting kids into projects that they aren't interested in. she says she had her first idea when she was five. Uh-oh.

Still, this is more interesting than Dawn's book. Kristy talks about being friends with Mary Anne and Claudia as a child and it is interesting because we get to hear about characters that we know well.

Anyway, they're playing in the snow and they want to give Mimi a present for her birthday. If anyone deserves that, it's Mimi. I love her. I can't wait to do Claudia's book because Mimi is so awesome. I feel warm inside when I read about her.

They decide to make snowmen and snowwomen for their neighbors and charge for it. That's kristys first "brilliant idea"

Although it is pretty cute. And people are happy to give them money because they love Mimi.

They go to the mall and Claudia and Kristy are completely fascinated by the escalator. Why is that always considered the most fascinating part of their mall? This has been mentioned before.

They get Mimi a scarf which she wore until she died. Too sweet to snark.
