Hey, dolls! So, I'm up late playing around and decided to snark. This part isn't the funniest snark seeing as this is a Very Special Episode book but I tried. It wasn't easy not getting furious at this book but I maintained my temper. It's hard for me to read books about racists without getting that smashy smashy feeling. Well, let's go!
Part 1!

It always breaks my heart that Jessi put all that work into that office set (which sounded awesome) and then got shot down because of her skin color.
You did a great job with this snark even if it wasn't easy to snark. Also I enjoy the hyprocrisy of Kristy not reading the book.
Dawn is an idiot and I love that we can find that in every book. It's so nice of Claudia to spend her money to satisfy Dawns diet.
Loving it!

Dawn is terrible. I mean, how ass is it to ask specifically for 'wheat germ' crackers? She couldn't have just said crackers? I think she was purposely trying to be difficult so that she could complain about her diet some more. Because God only knows she doesn't draw enough attention to herself every second of the day.

Of course! She has to make sure everyone that stops by knows how special she is! Even it it means losing money because she can't seem to prepare anything decent when it comes to food. Dawn is the worst!
Mary Anne, if Claudia was talking about them looking alike, she would've said "They look alike!"
I think Mary Anne and Jessi suffer the most from Ann making her characters stupid. They're always saying incredibly stupid things so Ann can explain things because she thinks her readers are dumb.
Karen is always fucking yelling. How many millions of times has someone told her to use her indoor voice? She needs to make sure all attention is on her at all times. I hate the annoying little brat.

Either that, or maybe she was wanting to make her younger readers feel smart for knowing things the older girls didn't?
But that doesn't make sense since they end up all acting and behaving years ABOVE their ages. I think Ann is just dumb.

Right? Dawn always has to make such a big deal about what she will and won't eat. Like when they threw her a going away party, the junk food was labeled as 'yucky'. Because that doesn't make her guests feel bad or anything. I swear if Dawn were real I'd end up beating her to death with a shovel.
I hated Mary Anne's response and making it all about her
This drives me crazy too. Like you said, the Lowells treated her nicely. You can't tell someone's Russian ancestry from looking at them. And she's still white. It's just mind boggling stupid of her to even bring this up. Especially with Jessi and Claudia right there.

"I swear Ann has never spent a moment with ANY REAL kid."
Fixed that for you. :)
K Ron says she should have told her and Claudia says she wrote about it in the notebook. Ho-oly fuck!
BUUUUURN!!!!
I wonder how big the kid kit is.
I always thought it was a shoe box.
This next part just breaks my heart and I have a hard time reading it. Me too, and it also makes me mad at Ann because it shows how much racism is nothing to Ann. We always see Jessi saying the town was so racist to her and her family, yet when there's BLATANT racism actually happening, she doesn't know what's going on. She was convinced Mallory was racist for being shy, and that Priscilla was racist for being scared after a bus crash, yet she's not going right to racism when a door is literally slammed in her face ( ... )

THIS is where you have Jessi deal with it! Either talk about WHY she's resigned, or have her react! What Ann did was write Jessi out of this book by sidelining her. There's nothing for Jessi to deal with here, even though she got the worst treatment of all the first. If she's so used to it that she's resigned to it, then she wouldn't have been confused earlier. Since she was confused, she should be reacting somehow here.
Both Stacey and Dawn say they wouldn't be caught dead at the Lowells and K Ron actually gets an idea. She calls Mrs Lowell back and says no one's available but Logan. Oh, what's that? Boys don't sit? Well, I might be able to sit if I'm not taking care of my very Vietnamese sister. What? Something suddenly came up? Okay, bye, scrote. For once I'm on Team Kristy here ( ... )

That's what I thought when I was young too, but they fit so much into them. Like, when Jessi puts together her office playset, she packs it into a seperate box that she then puts into the kid kit. And they always say they have more than one board game in them. It's been 30 years and I still don't understand the kid kits.
I'm just really trying to figure out how Jessi's race is in any way relevant here
I always thought that maybe Kristy had an inkling about what was going on and mentioned Jessi's race to see what their reaction would be. But I might be giving her too much credit. I asked my bestie about how Ann always makes a point to mention Jessi's race (she's black herself) and she said yeah, that's pretty racist because being black hasn't anything to do with her personality wise. Like you said, just mention the things she likes. If you buy the books, you see the club members on the cover and what they look like.
Either talk about WHY she's resigned, or have her reactIt did talk some about why ( ... )
