The chamber pointed at her chest is such an empty threat. Leave or die. It was true regardless. So she closes the door behind the last marine, sits down beside Kendra and curves her hand around her thigh.
“I gave you an order, Captain.”
“Shut it, Major.” It’s not that Kara can’t live without her, because she’s lived without Zak, she knows she could. It’s that she doesn’t want Kendra to feel the way she felt when she was the one who to stay behind. The order left her with a clear view of the chasm she was heading towards, her one bright spot limping before her, clutching her side.
She kisses the space just below Kendra’s ear, the spot where tiny needle pricks have been healing over and vanishing for weeks now. “There’s no place I’d rather be.”
