I love this line: The Vipers are slowly evolving from uniform craft to however we can get them out the tubes, and sometimes it's the only nice thing left, the mental challenge of "how the frak did Lt Thrace get this bird back on deck? How the frak do I fix it?" because I think it clearly addresses the issue of these folks going from knowing what parts, what pieces, how everything fits to what will work and can I come up with something. A difficult mental adjustment, I'd think.
:D
And, your Sat 9:15am post is 3:45 before deadline. Sville's 10pm Friday is US east coast, which is, thus, apparently, your 1pm Saturday. ;)
One and only nitpick: I believe the word is "aileron." :)
That said, this is a fantastic piece, full of all those little details that tell so much and create so much atmosphere just by being there. You've created a very rich character voice, as well, with plenty of very Cally attitude. I love how observant you've made her, and what we learn about the Galactica from that; "Anyway, as you can probably see, observation of the species: Viper Pilot has become a deck habit" is a fantastic line.
There's a very real poignancy to all the tidbits of where she might have been otherwise and where she would rather be. All in all, wonderful job.
it's aerilon...all the colonies seem to be named after the zodiac signs. this one being closest to aeries. vergon = vergo, geminon = gemini, caprica = capricorn, tauran = taurus, aquaria = aquarius, leonis = leo, canceron = cancer, picon = pisces...i wanna say the one for scorpio is sagitaron, but i could be wrong and we either don't know or haven't heard reference to the others. just...ya know...saying.
That's compelling! You've captured a great train of thought there with Cally's view on life, work and surviving in the not-so-brave new world she's in.
And thanks for the time-cap Flora! I used to be pretty comfortable figuring out the time gaps after years online gaming but it's been a while.
Cally's damned easy to write. She's not old enough to have learned not to talk about what she thinks, and like any person who has a huge specialty, it's easy for her to get sidetracked in the details.
*G* and to think I started out for this piece writing about Tigh, and his views on being an XO on the wagon.
