Yes, for some reason this turned out to be a happy AU moment. I had this whole backstory to the drabble worked out where Kara was still working as an academy flight instructor, and Zak was flying commercial transports (he never did make it to Vipers), and Lee was buried in law libraries. Originally I had thought about having Kara and Zak try to set Lee up with someone on a date (Six?!), but I came to my senses and discarded that idea fairly early....

To your last small-font point: I wrote this thinking that they don't have much time before the world ends. And they're all on Caprica. It's one moment that didn't happen before the end of the world that did. Does that make sense?

oah, yay for posting our first story!

this is great. I love how Kara thinks of Lee here, how in love she is with both Zak and flying. also, the differences in everything and everyone that not being raised by their father brought on. very awesome. ;)

It was more interesting than I expected to remove Adama from their lives. All of a sudden Lee didn't have to join the military. And, to my mind, that removed additional pressure off Zak to fly at all costs. I couldn't see Kara doing anything else but flying, but I saw her as being satisfied with the two loves of her life, even if she wasn't out in space. Zak could be compensation for that...

Yay, someone actually responded to the challenge!

I really like this. People are always making excuses that Kara didn't really love Zak, but I can see her being happy this way, with Zak and flying, and not having all those issues between her and Lee. It's nice to see a happy fic that I can actually believe.

I loved the challenge. It inspired me to think about more than just this AU, to be honest. But I'm still working on the rest.

I'm glad you found the fic believable. I do think that Kara loved Zak. I especially buy that idea if she didn't really know Lee first (a bit of my own bias in that statement that you'll have to ignore *g*). In the backstory I imagined for this fic, I figured that she didn't know Lee at all until she met Zak in flight training, that they were friends in the way that in-laws and family members are friends, but they came to their friendship fully formed by life. I'm not making sense, I think, so I'll stop here. :-)

No, that makes perfect sense. Do you think she didn't know Lee first in the actual BSG canon version, or just for the purposes of this AU?

I'm looking forward to seeing what else you write. AUs can be really interesting, and BSG has a lot of untapped AU potential.
