ar_drabbles The bell above the door tinged as she entered the familiar shop. Everything was exactly how she remembered it from all those months ago.
The familiar shape of the owner ambled into view, stopping in his tracks at the sight of her.
He remembers me, she mused contentedly.
Feeling a bit braver she moved towards the counter. She was reaching into her pocket to retrieve the precious piece of metal when his voice stopped her.
“How is your mother doing?”
She glanced at him, noting the concern in his deep blue eyes.
“She passed away last week.”
He murmured an I’m sorry but she brushed it off like she had been doing for the last week. At least this pawn shop owner looked more genuine when saying those words than any of her so called friends had. Not that she had many friends left.
Finally she grasped the reason why she came here and placed it firmly on the counter.
The small gold ring sat glinting on the glass top counter.
“What’s this?” He asked, picking up the ring between his forefinger and his thumb.
“It was my father’s. He would have wanted it to go to someone with a good heart.” She took a deep breath as memories of time spent with her jovial father flooded her mind.
“What you did for me was the kindest thing anyone has ever done for me. So this is a thank you; a gift.”
Before he had a chance to argue she grasped his wrist and slid the ring onto his middle finger. She smiled at how perfectly it fit him.
“Thank you, Mr Adama.”
“Bill.”
He moved his hand swiftly so that he was grasping hers in a handshake, obviously expecting her to introduce herself as well.
“Laura,” she whispered in reply.
