Hey, I just got that book for Christmas! It had been on my wish list for a while now. Oddly, my mother expressed an interest in reading it when I'm done.

No worries, I've read about it before. I don't know about the Sarah movie, but a film of The Heart is Deceitful Above All Things is making the rounds at festivals now.

Have you read anything by JT's literary benefactor, Dennis Cooper? I suggest Frisk; there's a movie (with - you guessed it - Parker Posey), but it's not got a lot to do with the book. It's toooooo --- textual ---.

A friend and I once made an unpublished zine about JT. The schtick was that instead of him it's Shirley Temple. Since he's so cute and little.

by coincidence, i was browsing Cooper's books today. over the weekend, i was reading a paper comparing JT LeRoy and Cooper, or at least mentioning JT being Cooper's unintentional prodigy.

should i start with the first book - Closure i think is the title, or Frisk?

Well, I'm a big fan, so I suggest reading all of them. Try is my favorite. Frisk is a more ... mature work than Closer, though, so, depending on how many pages of blood-spattering violence, paedophilia, and descriptions of teenage rectums you're in for, you might just want to look at that.
