Narcissa read the
letter from Pansy Parkinson with amazement.
She sat down on the drawing room sofa to read the letter and write back.
Dear Pansy,
First of all, thank you for writing. It was a pleasure to receive your letter and to read it. I am touched and grateful for your concern for our family. It means much to me.
Life here has been...uncomfortable, lately. I feel as if we are all walking on eggshells, wanting to say things to each other but not quite daring to. For myself, I don't know where to begin.
Draco is...as well as can be expected after having lived through a two year-long ordeal. We are trying to persuade him to return to Hogwarts for his NEWT examinations. I know it will be hard for him, and it will take a lot of courage for him to return and be among students who might well consider him their enemy. He could use a true friend, right now. If you would like to be that friend, I would welcome you to come visit him. I can't promise how Draco will behave; he has been rather moody of late, as we all have. I don't foresee that changing any time soon.
I feel as if our home is no longer the place I have loved for some twenty years. I feel as if it has been defiled, raped. I am sorry for using such blunt language, but that's how it feels. Unspeakable things were done here, and even if they were done to Muggles and their partisans, the acts were no less unspeakable.
It has forced me to re-examine everything I ever thought was true about my family's attitudes toward the world when I was growing up. There just comes a time when you cannot close your eyes to it, anymore.
I hope I have not been more candid with you than you wished. I thought it best to let you know what I am thinking before you commit to associating with us further. Right now, we are well-regarded by no one, and I don't want you to be harmed socially by contact with us, unless that is a risk you are willing to take. I was not so brave at your age.
Kindest regards,
Narcissa Malfoy
