I guess the Family Ties Universe should really be called...
The Tommy Westphall Universe!! I found a website explaining how so many worlds tie into the Family Ties Universe, which includes MJF's other sitcom, Spin City. I would like to think that Mike Flaherty and Alex Keaton eventually learn to get alone. They're both nice fellows - it's just that they are diametrically opposed to each other, politics wise. As the great Michael J Fox would say, though - people should be able to disagree on politics and still respect each other's views. Maybe when I write to MJF, I'll ask him if he thinks Mike Flaherty and Alex Keaton would eventually learn to get along. I bet he would say 'yes'.
Anyway, back to the topic at hand, this whole universe starts in the TV show, St Elsewhere. It turns out that Tommy Westphall had dreamed the whole series. Furthermore, Bob Hartley from The Bob Newhart Show has dreamed up a whole new world, with it's affiliated TV series. Now, the question is, would those series exist as TV shows in Tommy Westphall's Dream Universe - aka, the Family Ties/Spin City Universe? Also, in The Bob Newhart Show, is Howard Borden who dreamed up the I Dream of Jeannie series.
Now, I have a problem with accepting Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel as being part of the Family Ties/Spin City Universe - especially if it's also the X-Files Universe, the Superman/Batman Universe, and the Touched By An Angel/The Promised Land Universe. To include Buffy/Angel in that universe would contradict many things - as that universe seems to suggest that the world inherently evil. Also, why would you need a Slayer, if you have Superman and Batman? Furthermore, the witches in that universe is definitely not those of the Bewitched variety. Then, for various reasons, Touched By An Angel contradicts everything that's suggested in Buffy/Angel. Also, not to mention that Spike enjoyed watching Passions.
As it turns out, though, the only connections Buffy really has to some other TV shows is the Morley's cigarettes and a mention of Yoyodyne. It doesn't necessarily means that all TV shows to feature Morley's cigarettes have to be a shared universe. As for the Yoyodyne, it could possibly refer to the character from Star Trek - and I'm torn on deciding if Star Trek can be part of the Family Ties/Spin City Universe.
Gee, I'm now realizing just how many classic TV shows are absent from the Family Ties/Spin City Universe. Also, I suppose Batman and Superman could still exist as fictional characters in that universe. I almost feel that they might actually exist in 'our' universe. BTW, I would maybe consider writing a sequel, where Marty McFly returns to the Family Ties/Spin City Universe - and Marty and Alex observe the lives of the characters from other TV series that die in. Maybe they'll even get to see a young Michael Flaherty. :-)
