Having the house to herself had become a rare, precious privilege in recent months. The year before had been a blessing: between her sister's dorm life and her mother's work, Dawn had often managed to imagine that it was her own house with her own rules. Since Buffy's return to the house on Revello Drive these afternoons had been sorely missed ( ... )

Buffy was surprised when she heard her sister's footsteps coming down the hall, mostly because she had been so quiet. Usually when Dawn was home alone, she was blasting some sort of teeny bopper pop music--music that Buffy obviously would not admit to sometimes enjoying. She waited a few pointed moments after her sister spoke before looking up, while very forcefully refraining from an eye roll.

"Don't you have something better to do? Like, your homework?" she shot back, closing the catalogue and tossing it back on the table.

She leaned forward, "Unlike some young, immature people who are still stuck in high school, I go to this fabulous place called college, which doesn't have class everyday. So, no, I don't need to be there." Especially not when Willow was always going to be diligently taking notes for her. But, really, she totally didn't have class today. She hoped not at least. Damn, she really needed to pay more attention to her school schedule.

Homework. Right - that was the thing she'd been forgetting earlier. Though really, it wasn't as thought it was actually difficult...they dumbed everything down to make it possible for people like Buffy to actually graduate and go to college. Dawn pursed her lips and sighed theatrically.

"Whatever," she muttered. "Are you going to be sittign around here all day? 'Cause I need to go to the store, Mom said she would take me but she's not home yet."

The fact that she was, in the same breath, insulting her sister and asking for a favor did not even cross Dawn's mind.

Buffy couldn't resist anymore and rolled her eyes freely. "Mom called me an hour ago and said she was going to be stuck at the gallery until really late," she said, pushing herself up off the couch. "So, we have to fend for ourselves tonight."

She ran a hand through her hair to express her very apparent annoyance, "Why do you need to go to the store? And what store?"

She had been looking forward to stuffing her face with some awful food and then patrolling, not sister sitting. But, there was no way she was leaving her sister all alone when Dawn could barely remember not to invite vampires into their home.
