Character Name: Glinda Upland
Series: Wicked: The Untold Story of the Witches of Oz
Age: Late 20's, although she may be older than she looks as she is not technically human.
From When?: The end of the musical. Glinda has announced the death of the Wicked Witch of the West to the citizens of Oz.
Inmate/Warden: Warden. Glinda is in all senses good at the core, kind-hearted and is capable of wonderful things. Although during the course of her canon Glinda is portrayed as an ambitious over-achiever who is direly shallow and self-centered, by its completion the character comes full circle. She recognises her powers should be used for defending what is good and right and she is determined to be the poster-girl for goodliness. Also, she can twirl her staff when she needs to and kick some ass.
Item:
Her wand / staff. Abilities/Powers: Glinda is a witch and has the ability to cast magic with the help of her wand although she is not as naturally gifted as she wishes. She acquired the grimmerie from Elphaba (The Wicked Witch of the West) before the green witch’s untimely melting. This book contains many difficult spells in a language that she is working her way through translating. She additionally can travel quickly from place to place via bubble.
Personality:
Glinda (formerly Galinda) is primarily characterised by two personality points; popularity and ambition. She was the typical popular blonde in every way; well liked, flirty, notoriously preppy, notoriously peppy and had a tendency to be selfish. In her youth she held a very narrow minded view of the world; placing much importance on image, being popular and having a high position in society. While at times she can be cruel when bending to social pressures (picking on the “odd” girl or agreeing with pack mentality) in her heart she is kind and only realises this when she finds her first deep friendship. Her language tends to be embellished as is the way of the citizens of the upper class emerald city people, adding suffixes and hyphens where hyphens usually shouldn’t go. As a consequence of her upper class upbringing and etiquette she is used to a certain standard of living, getting her own way and becoming swiftly upset when neither occur. Although, as she has grown older such impulses to tantrums have diminished significantly She is by no means unintelligent despite what many may think. She succesffully attended Shiz University and completed her sorcery training with high honors, but has other interests in high society cultural subjects.
It is almost if Glinda is genetically and socially designed to achieve in life. In the past she did whatever it took to get it. When Elphaba decides to rebel against the powerful and high ranking Wizard of Oz, she offers Glinda the chance to join her crusade, but Glinda prefers to play it safe and moreover explore her political opportunities. The title of “Glinda the Good” as bestowed by the Wizard allowed her to become a political puppet for the Wizard, setting her up against the “Wicked Witch of the West”. When spiteful lies and speculation are spread against Elphaba she publically supports them to retain her position, although privately laments her decisions and resides herself that no-one could resist the pull of where she is and all that is now available to her as the Wizard’s pawn. By the time the lies about Elphaba get too harsh, it’s evident that Glinda has realised although she is loved by all of Oz, it is a superficial love and she has lost the one true friend she had ever had.
Much of her energy spent convincing the public is her way of convincing herself what she does is the right thing. It is only after the events of losing her best friend does she start the process of private contemplation away from the public eye and thinking for herself for once. Although her initial drive to sorcery was for the accolades and place in society the position would hold, after time she realises that with this power comes the chance to do real good in OZ. She is determined to follow in Elphaba’s footsteps and fight injustice, cruelty and in all senses (and ironically) wickedness.
When a love triangle between Glinda, Fieryo and Elphaba forms; Glinda is shocked when she loses. While in their youth, Galinda and Fiyero gravitate towards each other as they are both equally shallow and come to the conclusion that since they are both “perfect” that they belong together. However, as Glinda continues to convince the society that they are madly in love Fiyero re-evaluates his priorities in life from the importance of image to doing the right thing, leaving Glinda for Elphaba.
It was her shallow and self-centered behaviors that uwittingly caused several pains in the lives of others. Most significantly; she unwittingly sets into motion the events that lead to an old school friend to become the Tin Woodsman and the death of Nessarose, the “Wicked Witch of the East”. Glinda was so adamant to bring Elphaba and Fiyero to justice for running away together, that she suggested to the Wizard and Madam Morrible that they spread a rumour about Nessarose being in danger to lure Elphaba out of hiding. The Wizard and Madam Morrible took Glinda's suggestion to its most extreme level, with Morrible creating the cyclone that brought Dorothy's house to Oz and crushed Nessarose to death. When Glinda realises her role in these acts, this fuels her determination to set things right; reuiniting with Elphaba to try in earnest to clear her friend’s name.
Having discovered what true happiness feels like, her narrow-minded perspective broadens. She resigns herself to being the role-model for goodliness and her concerns shift from image to things that matter, like friendship. Glinda eventually comes to understand that Elphaba and Fiyero deserved each other in the most positive sense of the term. She tries to avenge Elphaba's supposed death by threatening to expose the Wizard as a fraud unless he leaves Oz altogether. Having thrown the fiendish Madam Morrible in jail, Glinda follows in Elphaba's footsteps, trying to fix all the damage that has been caused in Oz over the past few decades, and hoping to truly earn her title as 'Glinda the Good' among the people.
History:
Glinda's History Additional barge history: When Glinda arrived on the barge a year ago she found herself in a world she had never dreamed of, but she would not let herself become overwhelmed despite the many tribulations that followed. She appeared on the barge in the midst of a classic genderswap flood and her eyes settled on the handsome Captain Morgan. There was need for plenty of powder for her red cheeks once the genders were reversed. She found it difficult to find friends at first on the barge, many of them being antagonistic to her manner of speech and peppy attitude. But she soon found friendship in the "blondes" of the barge; Cissie, Sveta, Una and 11-12. She continued her deciphering of the Grimmerie with the assistance of magic users of the barge. The Dasterdly Dreadful Doctor Hix was of particular help. Glinda will miss him once she realises he is no long on board. Her one and only inmate was a fleeting experience and she hopes to continue her ladies hair salon. When she departed the barge it was, in her mind, only for a moment; returning to Oz to bring back some natural herbs for her elixir making. To her dismay, she will return not knowing any time has passed with good friends lost and wicked enemies remaining.
As for Elphaba's presence on board... it just could render her speechless, for once.
Sample Journal Entry: [5-10 Sentences]
[Video message: Glinda's return. After almost a year's absence from the barge Glinda steps back onto the network's video feed dressed as decadently as you can for travelling attire. A small travelling hat is propped on her mass of blonde curls, which she removes delicately. Her voice is a slight rush having just set down her belongings to her room, but lyrical and light as always.
Speaking of rooms, hers was on a different level entirely. Not that she noticed. More often than not she let her bubble do the driving. ]
Dear the graceful and wonderous Ozma, that took more clock ticks than expected! Oh my, [She spots herself in her opened purse mirror and makes sure her hair is positively perfect in every way. Lip pucker aaaand perfect~! She smiles. The hand mirror goes snap!] I haven't missed much have I? I'd be redder than a munchkin's cheek if I wasn't present for any movings and shakings. Tell me the good news, bargians! Save the tragedy for another time, my spirit is too grand.
[Private to Cissie]
Cissie dearest, I have a gift for you from the Emerald City. I spied it a small boutique on the promenade and it just jumped out at me and sang, "Cissie!! Cissie!!" [She titters] I do hope you like it.
[Private to Dr. Hix [Reverting to PUBLIC as he is not here]]
Devious and dreadful doctor, I brought back some Ozian florae for you to examinate should you like. Some very potentiable pieces here. [Her nose curls slightly, but reverts almost reflexedly as she draws a finger around the lip of one of several glass jars of flowers, flourescent coloured powders and one with a liquid that shines like liquid sapphires] Yes, we wouldn't want these in the wrong hands. You simply must come and see them. Much effort was taken in retriving them and I wonder if any of these are like what you have on your discworld? How wonderful would that be?

Sample RP: [3-5 paragraphs, 3rd Person POV]
“Good News! She’s Dead! The Witch of the West is Dead!!” She can hear the hollers and cheers from the citizens of Oz from the courtyard of the Emerald City main hall. Her glossed fingernails rap on the railings of the grand staircase behind closed doors. Here where she is away from the people who look up to her as the statue of good and pure in the world, when at times such as this, she feels neither.
Not two turns of the Time Dragon Clock had spun since Elphaba had been murdered. She wished to Great Ozma for time to stop completely so she could have this moment to grieve, but she had a duty to perform. To hear them cry outside of her wickedness broke her heart. Elphaba was the most good-hearted soul she knew. Gosh. She had known.
Her eyes started to water at the truth of it. Elphaba, her best friend, was dead. She dabbed her eyes with a satin handkerchief. Blue and silver glitter stained the fabric where the tears had dampened it. Her best smile painted her face as the bubble lifted to meet her expectant crowd.
