Well that takes me back to the dumb Polock (sp?) jokes....I guess they really are true...Because I've never gotten sick from eating the "wrong end" of the banana...

i have been giggling all day over this. your ethnographic observation and intercultural comparison has expanded our knowledge of this strange and peculiar society. i do have a couple of suggestions, though:

ask your subjects the origin of this behavior.

and, as an experiment, see what happens when you place a pineapple in front of them. (yes, a whole pineapple.)

unfortunately the origin of this behavior is still a mystery and i believe will remain very hard to determine, it does seem the only logical choice though

as for the pineapple, since until not so long ago pineapples were not so easily attainable in Poland I think it is safe to assume that a common behavior has not yet been established

As much as I hate to confess it, I have recently met a Subject who is very much Polish, and yet eats the banana from the "wrong" end. He simply opens the UNWASHED banana by breaking the stem and eats the whole thing. I know. I'm horrified as well.
