He Keeps Waiting

01. Ring
"Just wait till you hear him sing - I'm telling you, he could really be our final guy," Kevin told AJ over the phone.
02. Hero
"What's he like?" AJ asked in a hushed voice; Nick looked at him, all wide eyes and already smitten, "Dude, Kevin told me he almost died when he was younger - how messed up is that?"
03. Memory
It was Brian who taught AJ how to swing his legs back and forth and sing silly songs; the way he used to do it back when he was five.
04. Box
AJ was good at sending out signals that made people judge him before they even knew him - rebel, probably fatherless, oh dear what a classic case, you stay away from that kid - a very convenient box that Brian had managed to break the first week when he'd said, "I really like your style - hey, you think you could help me pick out a tattoo design?"
05. Run
They stood in front of the conference room, getting ready to face the man they had considered to be the sixth Backstreet Boy, when AJ felt his breathing going shallow - suddenly he was moving, but Brian stopped him with a hand on his arm and a hard look in his eyes.
06. Hurricane
Brian wanted the incredible highs, the rush and the whirlwind that was his professional life - but nothing made him smile quite like the way AJ looked before he'd had his first cup of coffee in the morning.
07. Wings
He'd been dreaming about birds just before he realized where he was - Brian turned over with what felt like the effort of a lifetime, but an arm wrapped around him before he was out of the bed, pulling him back against a sleep-warm body; "Stay," AJ murmured into his shoulder, "M'tired of letting you leave."
08. Cold
There was something about the smell of chlorine that made the image sharp and vivid again; ripples in the water as they shifted, water droplets clinging to his eyelashes - the sound of awed disbelief that had echoed in the small room as their lips had pressed together, hesitant and yet finally ready - the image flickered, but Brian could still feel the goosebumps prickling on his skin.
09. Red
AJ yelped when something hit him right between the eyes; when he looked down, a red Skittle had fallen into his lap, and when he looked back up Brian was laughing so hard he was gasping for air.
10. Drink
"To hell with Jack Daniels," Brian hissed, pinning AJ's wrists above his head and murmuring the same words again into AJ's mouth.
11. Midnight
Brian fell asleep in a recliner next to AJ's bed, and was only a little surprised when a warm body settled carefully into his lap some time later; the slow breaths against his neck were comforting.
12. Temptation
Brian met his gaze and AJ looked away, away, heart beating wildly in his chest.
13. View
It was probably silly, but there were times where all he wanted was to lie next to Brian and talk nonsense, just so he could watch the small changes in Brian's expressions with each new story.
14. Music
His legs were tangled up in the sheets; AJ's fingers trailed down his arm and all Brian was capable of was a sleepy smile and a quiet hum.
15. Silk
Brian kissed like he had all the time in the world - fingers skimming down AJ's neck as he leaned in, it was open and slow and hot, shared breaths and light teasing bites, and AJ could feel Brian's grin form against his lips when he finally sagged against the wall.
16. Cover
The bed and the covers were not big enough, so Brian had to sleep with half his body on top of him to fit - AJ was pretty sure he liked sleeping better this way.
17. Promise
"Okay, no more hickeys above the shirt collar," Brian declared, but it quickly turned into a grin when AJ rolled his eyes and muttered, "yeah, right."
18. Dream
"You were a superhero," AJ began, and Brian was already smiling, "except you kept all kinds of animals in your apartment and you said 'all righty then' a lot."
19. Candle
Brian had always been a romantic, but there were things he couldn't do as much now that he was with a guy; he had never lit a candle or invited AJ to a fancy restaurant, but he gave him a chew toy for his dog once, and the smile on AJ's face had been worth all the other things he couldn't do (maybe someday he might be able to.)
20. Talent
"Giving or receiving?" Brian asked out of nowhere, tapping a beat with his foot; AJ slouched further in his seat and scoffed, "Don't insult me."
21. Silence
There was a unsettling ache in Brian's chest - I think I'm … I think I could be- - and when AJ opened his eyes, there was blood rushing in his ears; "Nothing," Brian rasped, clearing his throat quickly, "It was nothing."
22. Journey
They were always on a bus, it seemed, and AJ spent a lot of that time not listening to Brian and Nick wrestle in the back room.
23. Fire
"Jesus," Nick groaned, "Brian, go sit next to AJ before his eyes drill a hole in your back."
24. Strength
AJ stared intently at his feet - there was a hole in his sock right by the big toe - and his shoulders tightened when Brian spoke quietly, "Did you think it was gonna be this hard?"
25. Mask
The decision to cool things for awhile was mutual, except for the fact that AJ mostly just nodded along and Brian only continued speaking because he thought AJ looked relieved.
26. Ice
She was a pretty girl with blinding white teeth, and AJ left with her after the concert, slinging his arm around her waist and feeling nothing at all (he didn't know Brian had watched him leave.)
27. Fall
As soon as the door closed they were touching, anywhere, everywhere, and Brian's eyes were big and watery as AJ croaked, "I miss you too much."
28. Forgotten
"Man, did you take this one?" Brian laughed, picking up an old photograph from the pile - "I don't even remember this" - he didn't notice that AJ was just watching him, thinking silly little things like you're adorable and look at those laugh lines that he would never ever say out loud.
29. Dance
AJ was humming to himself when he felt it, a calloused hand on his bare stomach and a soft kiss on his shoulder; Brian moved away too quickly, but AJ's body still felt the warmth of Brian pressed up against his back, swaying with him.
30. Body
AJ could do things - make him feel things - that was almost too much to take; the way he moved his hips in bed could leave Brian shivering hours later, just from the memory of it.
31. Sacred
"A fan gave me this," AJ told the interviewer and pointed to the biggest ring on his hand - next to him, Brian couldn't stop smiling.
32. Farewells
"It's just for a month, right?" Brian whispered in his ear; AJ gave him a half smile, cigarette dangling from his fingers, and nodded.
33. World
Traveling really wasn't the same without Brian's commentary on all the new foods they tried and the exotic places they went to.
34. Formal
"Give them a smile, Rok," AJ murmured into his ear as twenty camera flashes went off all at once - Brian hated fake smiles, but he did it anyway.
35. Fever
"Just breathe," AJ whispered and brushed sweaty bangs from Brian's forehead, "Relax - try to get some sleep, I'll be right here when you wake up."
36. Laugh
"You're crazy," Brian mumbled with laughter in his voice; AJ just smiled and kissed him deeper.
37. Lies
"You … you look like a girl," Brian said wide-eyed, studying AJ's eyeliner, but AJ smirked when Brian's voice began to crack.
38. Forever
Brian ran his hands over AJ's shoulders and looked up ("You know that I - I mean, you know I do, right?"); his hands stopped on AJ's chest, adding light pressure, and AJ smiled warmly ("Yeah, I know.")
39. Overwhelmed
AJ had no idea how Brian did it, but - he just knew, for some reason, and he would sit next to AJ for as long as it took until the panic started to subside again.
40. Whisper
You … it's never been like this, I don't- - Brian frowned a little in his sleep, shifting closer to something warm, and the buzzing in his ear that reminded him of words suddenly stopped.
41. Wait
"Hang on a second, I gotta get my-" - "No no, it's fine, I'll just meet you downstairs"; when AJ looked up again, Brian was already gone.
42. Talk
"So, I was like 'what the hell, dude, you got something to say you say it to my face' and then the chicken shit calls for his friends, right, and I'm pretty much fucked-" AJ adjusted his sunglasses and tried to look away from Nick as casually as possible; Brian was on the other side of the bus.
43. Search
"Has he said anything to you?" AJ asked one day; Howie shook his head and gave him a friendly pat on the back, "Sorry, man - but, hey, I'm sure he'd tell you if something was wrong."
44. Hope
"He wouldn't leave me again," AJ thought out loud; Nick turned around and frowned, "Of course he wouldn't - what the hell are you talking about?"
45. Eclipse
AJ was smiling as he scribbled an autograph and handed it back into the crowd, but when he looked up again there was a new flock of fans all around them, blocking Brian from his view.
46. Gravity
Brian felt violently raw around AJ some days; it was hard not to, the way he would claw at you and pull you down, just so he wouldn't be alone in the darkness.
47. Highway
Road signs, gas stations - the rattling of the bus sent vibrations though him, and when Brian settled down behind him and murmured, "I'm not going anywhere, you know," AJ leaned back against Brian's chest and looked out the window again.
48. Unknown
"You're really lucky," AJ said quietly, "You've got it all figured out - who you are, what you want - you're just … you're right there, aren't you?" - Brian pressed his forehead against AJ's back and closed his eyes with a sigh.
49. Lock
Behind closed doors it was easier; Brian could pull AJ close and kiss him, whisper the three words he was so scared of, the words he always made himself say because they made AJ's smile look real again.
50. Breathe
"I wish I could tell you how-" AJ said breathlessly, eyes blazing, but Brian just nodded and placed a gentle kiss under AJ's jaw.
