Ok so this is going to be a comment on my own prompt. I was trying to think of some exaples of shame in the book and I thought of one. My one example is in the story enemies when Jensen broke Strunk's nose and he felt so shameful that he broke his own nose and then after he broke it he went up to Strunk and showed him that he broke his own nose. Alrighty, well theres my example.
Shame in O'BrienmsptakDecember 28 2004, 22:04:15 UTC
Maggie,
Think back to "On the Rainy River." In this story, O'Brien deals with his shame at not dodging the draft; this is an interesting reversal of the usual "brave war hero" character of most war stories; for O'Brien, being brave would be to run away from war, not towards it. Think about how O'Brien deals with his feelings of shame, and then think about others-- Jimmy Cross, for example.
