Work is just a giant game you play to hopefully stay employed and make connections for your next job.

Haha yes. I think if I stay in Humboldt County though I plan to retire working for the County. I could, if I stick it out (which is easy, as James has a co-worker who is elderly and falls asleep in reception), end up with 90% of my paycheck and benefits. BUT I HAVE TO DEAL WITH INSANITY FOR IT.... Trade-off?

Totally a good trade-off. If you can keep a county or city job, you're set for life. Just keep playin' the game. Keep going to those happy hours and accept every lunch invite, even if you would rather go for a walk in the beautiful sunshine or hunker in a corner reading a book. Shmooze...

I'm not cool enough to get lunch invites that would change my career, but I have gone to the Local (there is a beer bar literally called "the Local" 2 doors down) with co-workers whose company I enjoy. One guy I used to work with elsewhere, it's hella cool! :)

Sadly, that is what most jobs are these days. :(

It really is sad. I hate the ethic that you have to stay in the office and look busy for 9 hours a day (not the supposed 8) just so you look like you are pulling in extra work and good stuff for the company.
