königs-pittsburgh

In case you didn't already see greg's or alan's writeup, here i am to report on our success solving the Königs-Pittsburgh Bridge Problem last saturday.

The idea is that while the original problem is not solvable, pittsburgh's variant is, and it turns out to be a 35-mile hike. The rules are that you must cross every bridge with at least one ( Read more... )

look around you, walking

I see the Veterans Bridge (aka I-579 over the Allegheny) has been excluded, presumably for non-hikeable/non-bikeable conditions?

Yes, oops, I also meant to say that in the rules: every pedestrian-navigable bridge.

Surprisingly, we never lost the sidewalk/trail during any point in the hike (even on the south sides of liberty and glenwood).

64 from Waterfront.

(We were originally planning on walking back, and Greg really wanted to and I could have done it, but it was cold and rainy and we would have gotten home close to midnight, so we convinced him to bus with us. :) )

I wanted him to do it (and leave me behind with the bus), actually. But I could not have done it myself, for sure.

Hm, I thought that you said that if I decided to walk, then you'd want to try to walk too, and that would be Bad.

I think in retrospect that it was better for my knee that I took the bus back. Given the option of walking those last four miles Saturday or being able to run four miles again sometime in the next three months, I'll go with the running. (I'm about to try that activity -- on a treadmill -- for the first time in a week; I'll let you know how it goes...)

we thought about doing it that way (especially towards the end when we were getting demoralised "maybe on bike we could do it"). a problem though is that a lot of the sidewalks would be really terrible on bikes, and a lot of the corresponding roads would also be ungreat. all the bridges had sidewalks, but e.g. the road between glenwood and homestead grays wouldn't be too pleasant. it could certainly be done with some bike-walking.
