Does that mean I should be more sympathetic with males, when they make errors in my emotional well being?

Well, that's one possible interpretation. You have to remember that when this quote was written (18th c.) I imagine it was common vernacular to use "men" instead of "people" or "men & women". I don't think that the quote was meant to be male specific. You could distill this quote to "engage brain before putting mouth in gear", but it sounds much better as written. I could be wrong.
