Jan 04, 2010 20:08

I've done new years goals for the past two years now. The first year I did extremely well. I followed through on all of my resolutions until at least October and the reason I stopped then was because I met all of the goals I still cared about reaching ( Read more... )

wow, that does seem hard....good luck! i also hope this doesn't mean we hang out less...maybe we'll have to find cheap things to do that don't involve alcohol at all? living on $10,000ish (i think that's around poverty level for 1 person...?) a year seems hard to do with rent, utilities, bills and grocery expenses alone, not to mention hanging out with people and trying to eat better!!! that's even $3,000 less than what i make! and good-for-you food can be expensive with the way our system is rigged. :/

anyway, i wish you luck and i hope you succeed! :)

I don't understand why you want to live at poverty level. I understand wanting to experience a culture in poverty, as in your first bullet point, but why live in it? As JK Rowling said, "Poverty is romanticized only by fools." Also, as I've found out first hand, it's much different to live simply by choice when you still have money in the bank, and to be forced to live that way. Not that I have ever been anywhere near poverty, but there was a time when I chose not to spend money and I had a couple thousand in the bank. Then I spent it all at once and kept having different things come up, and it changed from not wanting to spend money to not being able to spend money. The psychology is completely different. I just don't want you to think that because you're choosing to live at the poverty line, you'll know what it's like to truly live in poverty.

I admire your desire to be more socially conscious, and I wish you the best of luck. I just want to make sure you've really thought through what you're doing and what you hope to gain.

Your first paragraph changes the way I was viewing Robby's decision. I understand better now.

I agree wholeheartedly with cutting out wasteful spending (Lord knows how often I complain about my parents'), I guess I just always imagined going about it purchase to purchase, and never thought about living on such a low budget.

I admire your goals, Robby, and I wish you all the best.

I hope your money actually makes it into those charities. There are a lot of bastards in that field.

Please make sure you have emergency funds set aside before you do this. If you lose your job and the stocks do poorly, then what?

Then I'll probably have to move into my parents' basement. And since I won't have a job, that will leave a lot of time for WoW. So either everything goes according to plan, or I move back home and play WoW all day. It's a win-win JK.
