I had to look this one up. Although there was quite a bit of 'it was caused by this' and 'it was caused by that' there doesn't seem to be a solid consensus as to what actually caused her to sink so abruptly. Did you have family on her?
None of my family was on board. I've heard the Gordon Lightfoot song "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" about a thousand times over the years, and it has always intrigued me. When I looked it up, I was surprised to see that today was the anniversary of that tragedy.
