[Hello, people of Johto. Today you’re in for a treat. The journal feed opens rather abruptly, as the force of a flying Magikarp shakes the screen. A frustrated southern belle sits patiently at the shoreline, an old rod in her hand.]

Alright, y’all. What’s with all these here Magikarp? I’ve been fishin’ here all day, and the only thing nibblin’ are ( Read more... )

Oh, Magikarp? They only grow up to be completely awesome... [Ritz is kneeing her Epic Knifebird Mount out of the shot and throwing a pokeball; suddenly, the streets of Goldenrod have Andre the Gyarados staring down at the gear.]

Oh my-- [Excuse her a second. She's never seen anything like that before.]

This is Andre. I caught him as a Magikarp. I had to keep sending him out and then switching for a pokemon that was more directly useful like Brenda here- [Ritz is patting the Skarmory with the hand not partially in a cast.] but after he evolved he was a force of nature. he also makes a good guy to travel with because he's big enough that half our traveling party's gear is nothing at all to him.

An' that big guy came from one of these wall-eyed bubble-blowers? [She looks down at Rainbow's ball in disbelief. No way can she be telling the truth.]

I wouldn't count on scaring them off. I'm not sure they actually understand things like consequences. Or fear. Or going back into water instead of flopping around on land.

[Harry briefly had a Magikarp the last time he came to Johto. He's not sure the fish ever quite understood that it was no longer in the ocean.]

I think the entire species might be in-bred or something.

They're all about as smart as a bag a' hammers, I reckon.

Either that or they're collectively playing dumb until they launch a campaign of vengeance for deep-sea tuna fishing or something.

...Not terribly likely, but given where we ARE...

They can't even fight the water. I wouldn't worry about them tryin' to take over.

You've probably already heard by now, but those guys actually get to be pretty tough when they level up enough, but... I think you start catching other water types the more you travel, if it helps.

Good to know. A friend of mine told me to look for a water type to fight the 'mean tree' pokey-mon so I can get to Ecruteak faster. But these fellers can't even fight the current.

[ Katara laughs a bit in agreement, but-- ] They're hard to train, at least I've heard. Naila was already evolved when I got her. I have some water types, if you're interested I could send you a Totodile, Eevee, or Squirtle egg when mine breed?

Actually... [ Looks thoughtful. ] You said Ecruteak? I'm heading that way. If you want I can help you get past it?

Um, well... it's about the Magikarp... certain pokemon live in certain areas, and... you'll only get Magikarp there...

Aw, shoot. An' I was hopin' to find a water-type to beat that tree pokey-mon with.

The fishing rods you can get in Cherrygrove are just below standard quality. A better rod would probably help.

These fish sure are picky then. Back home, I'd have no trouble catchin' fish with a stick an' some string. Guess I'll have to get me one of them fancy rods one of these days.

It's just that better rods usually get to deeper waters, and that lets you catch the pokémon that live there.

It's mostly Magikarp in the shallow waters.

That's a real shame. A water-type would be real helpful against that tree pokey-mon blockin' the way to Ecruteak.
