If you were serious about defining "significant progress" as "something that gives me some kind of indication that sustained happiness is at least within the realm of the human experience and attainable," you said in your own post that there are people you have seen whose lives seem to be together, or who have enough positive in their life to outweigh the negative. Congratulations, your quest is over. If that doesn't do it for you, consider someone who is on an IV drip of ecstasy, or someone who has a car battery hooked up to the pleasure centers of their brain. That's sustained happiness, but it's also meaningless

Well, I suppose different people have different standards for what makes life worth it. All those things you outlined may be enough for most people. I have all of those things, yet still I find myself dissatisfied. I hardly think that all of those people I'm "disrespecting" are going to be in any way affected if I were to end my life. It would be of no consequence to them
