When the monkeys are in charge of the circus

I've never completely understood the financial aid process. I've tried to extract from it the most understanding I can, and I always thought I at least had a general grasp on things and the way they work, but I never completely understood all the finer details. I've determined that every financial aid office's computer system is shit. I wanted absolutely nothing to do with loans, but I did, of course, want all my scholarships. The system, for some reason, just couldn't understand this, and decided instead that I should get no financial aid and pay the whole $8000+ for the semester. Thankfully they let you enter your own amount in the payment form, so I subtracted all my scholarships and paid only a much more manageable $1500. It took about three weeks for the system to finally understand what was happening and show a balance of $0. I'm like, "Finally! It's done!"

Then, suddenly, I owed $500. Turns out the National Merit scholarship isn't finalized until some time later this month, so I had to pay that, and then they'll credit my account later. I can't just let it sit there, either. I have to pay $500 so I can get a $500 check in a few weeks.

Financial aid people are complete dolts.
