AKICILJ - tax software recommendations

So it's tax time again... and I need recommendations on which tax software to use. For the past two years, I used TaxCut. Before I buy software for this year, I want to make sure that whatever software I buy will do what I need easily and without me having to jump through lots of hoops to make it work ( Read more... )

In my experience, TurboTax is the simplest program to use. Not the cheapest, but you're paying for them to simplify stuff. The one year when I had both Michigan and California stuff to file (1994), it handled things for me. As near as I can tell, other than price, the difference between TurboTax on your computer and TurboTax Online is just which computer crunches numbers.

(Not that I'm planning to use TurboTax this year. At this point, it makes more sense for me to use something with a lower price tag and less hand-holding. When I have all my paperwork in, I'll see if I can con some site into letting me e-file for free. But the oil-pipeline-limited-partnership required forms that none of the free sites handled last year. We'll see if it does the same thing this year.)
