It really shouldn't be a burden for you friends to help you out in a time of need. Most people will udnerstand that loosing a pet is a HUGe deal and will be there for you.
Don't write them off so easily and give them a try.
i still feel funny doing it, i'm sure it makes them uncomfortable and a few already said they didn't know what to say.. i guess it would be easier talking to someone who had a similiar thing happen.
I understand what you mean when you say you don't want to burden your friends. I only had a handful of people to talk to who I felt could really relate to what my mom and I had had to do. It's not that my other friends didn't or couldn't understand...to me it just didn't feel like it helped anyone, they didn't know what to say to me to make me feel better and I didn't know how to talk to them about it.
We didn't have my cat cremated, so I don't really have any insight for you there...sorry I can't be of more help!

I'm so sorry for your loss of Toto. Thanks for adding your condolences to Fuzzy Stone's "book" too. I have been through this experience twice now in as many years and have found that you really have two types of friends. One type are the "animal people" who can listen to you and cry along with you as you spill out your heart. The other type are the ones who don't understand, but they are your friends, so they play another role in the grief process by helping to distract you from the pain. It doesn't help to talk about your loss with them because it either makes them uncomfortable or they are just clueless about how you feel. But they are happy to invite you over or call you up and provide some entertainment to get your mind off your grief for awhile. I could never have survived the past week without both types of friends
