The BBC 'news' piece suggesting that many parents want the return of corporal punishment ends by reporting that the survey asked which celeb would make a good teacher in the opinion of the respondents.

The real answer? Not one of them without decent training, and several years of it.

Do you remember a few years ago when the media was on about the 'dumbing down' of Britain? Questions like that suggest that ship may now have sailed!

So much this. Being a teacher is one of those thankless jobs that people like to take the piss out of. Makes me very sad.

Completely agree. I have friends who are teachers and one who is just starting his training so I've seen how hard the process is.

Jusr read the article - the fact that students have listed Cheryl Cole and David Beckham as good teachers saddens me as it means they have more respect for an unknown celebrity regardless of their abilties than a professional adult that has devoted their working life to helping *them* get a decent education. But then I guess we knew that anyway!
