in australia, you can request that a vet come to your home to euthanize an animal. you could investigate that option, for when he begins to suffer so much that neither of you can bear it...

beyond that, as long as he's being loving towards you, he probably wants to live.

Part of how we knew it was time for Sophie was that she became complacent about those last few trips to the vet... maybe that will serve as an indication for you as well.

I would second seeing if you can find someone to come and do it at home when it's time. There are vets in the States who do it as well, though I'm not sure how you find them. Ultimately we ended up taking Sophie in because we had a wonderful doctor, and she seemed like she'd checked out already anyway, but in-home was an option we thought very hard about.

I'm really sorry, though I'm glad you can drink in that love for a little while longer.

Thank you all for the advice. . .it's damn good.

The good news is that he's eating a bit again and gaining some strenght. A neighbor said that her cat doesn't eat when she's out of town (I was gone for over a week to bring Andy to the relatives in NY) and that was probably what happened.

When you are 17 with Kidney failure - not eating has a huge impact.

Looks like I simply can't go on a trip till he's naturally done.

Good & bad - you know?
