I just recently started watching House M.D. properly, from the first season, and oh LOVE LOVE LOVE. Way better than ER, even.

Maybe she's thinking of the cyanobacteria living in coral?

I also went over corals having zooxanthellae (I thought they were usually photosynthetic dinoflagellates - you say cyanobacteria are known to do it too?), so that's a good point.

I guess she could have gotten corals mixed up somehow with fishes. But when I think of fishes, I think of... well... fishes, sharks, things with fins, swimming in oceans and lakes and rivers.

Corals don't swim and have no fins.

Maybe the less I say at any one time when we meet for tutoring, the better.
