Bookstore Fun

May 09, 2005 18:51

You know, this whole outing would probably be better if it was the library rather than a bookstore, because it's not like we have money to spend on books right now, so we're kinda torturing ourselves in a way aren't we?

Not that I'm gonna let Mike know that, because he wanted us to do something fun, and it doesn't cost anything to just look so I' ( Read more... )

I pant softly as I rush into the nearby bookstore. Free at last, I think. Okay, so I wasn’t truly meaning to escape from my parents’ dinner party, really. They just do this every time we come to a new place; invite the whole block over for dinner. Joy, really, I then have other people’s parents telling me how adorable I am and how I should meet up sometime with their really handsome sons. It’s a pain and, I’m sure, Mom and Dad are going to be uber pissed that I ditched the whole thing.

One time, I’d like to find one place that we just stay in. Even if it happens to be super cold Salem.

Breathing heavily, I start to search through the stacks for the best hiding place. In the back…

I look up from the stacks as I hear someone sounding a little out of breath heading in my general direction. The sight I'm greeted with is a girl, clearly not from around here, a little taller than I am, but about the same age, with the bluest eyes I'd ever seen.

She looks like she's determined to get somewhere...but where in a dinky little bookstore?

"Um...are you alright?" I asked hesitantly, sure she doesn't want some stranger sticking their nose in her business.

I jump at the sound in the quiet bookstore, but then smile when I see it's not anyone I know. Like I know anyone in this place? The girl probably has the brightest red hair in the entire world. It's way prettier than my mousy brown hair.

"Just escaping," I admit. "Bookstore seemed a good place to hide." I duck behind a stack and the other girl as I hear my father's voice in the distance outside the window.

"Shoot," I mutter, mostly to myself.

"Well, if anyone asks, I haven't noticed anyone." I told her quietly, wondering if she thinks whoever it is that's looking for her won't notice her behind me.

"Maybe he won't even think to come in here...do you usually hang out in bookstores?" I asked when I heard her mutter shoot.

I couldn't surpress a small smile as Casey tried to insist my hair wasn't horribly mousy. It was sweet, but dealing with this hair for years I knew it was only semi-true. I believed her when she told me that it made my eyes seem brighter. For her, I could cast a smile behind my frown.

"My father," I told her softly. "I mean, really, both of my parents. Everytime we move it's like dinner party for the whole neighbourhood. You'd probably run hiding from little old ladies who do worse pinching to your cheeks than grandmothers and try to set you up with their sons."

"Wow..." I breathed as she briefly outlined what she was avoiding. "I can't say I've ever had that problem, my family's not really the 'throw big parties of any sort' kind, but I could definitely see why you'd want to be pretty much anywhere but there." I told her.

"Could I make a little suggestion though, you know, in case you need to do the hiding bit again? Maybe choose somewhere you wouldn't normally go so your Dad really wouldn't have a clue where to find you." I suggested with a smile.

"Right, that's sort of where I have problems. This town isn't chockfull of places to hide, you know? It's sort of a new place. I see a bookstore, it becomes home." I replied softly.

At least dad would be happy I made a friend. Mom would still be stuck on how I missed precious dinner. It's times like these that I miss Isabel. Yeah, like hiding at your sister's apartment wouldn't be obvious?

"Okay, good point..." I nodded slightly. "Well, after a bit more time you'll get to know your way around know the less obvious places." I told her. "Or if you're really stuck, I'm sure I could figure something out for you."

I wasn't really sure, but I thought Savannah was the closest thing to a friend I'd had in...well, ever really. She was telling me things because she wanted to, not because she feels like she has to for some reason, and seeming pretty okay with that. It was kind of an odd feeling...even this small level of acceptance from someone my own age.

"Maybe the smile is just a disguise to hide the fact that I'd probably blush at any moment now." I admitted with a cheeky grin.

"We already established how your hair is this pretty color that makes me want to go 'Oooh, shiny!' right?" I asked her when she questioned if it was a good thing or not.

"Okay, yeah, you did." I agreed with a smile. "You're amused with my insanely, bordering on un-natural, red hair. Got it. As a concept anyway. Not entirely sure as to the 'Why' of it." I admitted to her.

Which was entirely true. Why anyone would be quite this fascinated with my hair, shiny or not, was a total mystery. Though, really, while we're on the subject of mysteries, I'm still not sure I understand what it is that makes me feel so comfortable around this girl...like I can really trust her and we could actually be really good friends if I could ever get over the nervous thing.

I shrugged, "It seems to me that a really outgoing brilliant girl is trying to get out of you. The bright hair, musical inclination, what you do..." I commented, probably going an inch too far. "And yet you're still hiding in a way..."

I think I have a tendancy to talk even when I should probably shut my mouth. I think this is one of those times.

As Savannah was talking, I felt my cheeks warm again. Part of me knew she was right...I mean, getting piles of awards and hiding, it just doesn't mix very well. Or even make sense to try.

"Things with my life...hiding's kinda become just as natural as playing my guitar is. It's just something that I've always had to do...which I'm sure makes no sense to you at all." I tried to explain quietly.
