So last night Mike and I FINALLY went to see Sweeney Todd the movie. Just for background, I've been a fan of this musical for almost 5 years and when I found out the movie was going to be made I tried to stay optimistic. I must say, certain points had me pleasantly surprised and certain things made me sad. Overall, I give the film a 4/5.
Likes:
-Johnny Depp as Sweeney did a wonderful job both acting and singing wise. He did a wonderful job being so engrossed in his own little world. Certain musical phrases he sang gave me chills. "My Friends" and "Epiphany" are great to listen to. I was very pleased.
-Alan Rickman as Judge Turpin was AMAZING! Creepy, horrid but still awesome. "Pretty Women", his duet with Johnny, was nothing short of pure awesome!
-The "By The Sea" sequence....SO FUNNY! I wish they hadn't cut so much of the song, but it got the point across. And dear God, Johnny's faces in this sequence were priceless!
-Ed Sanders as Toby was the most adorable child EVER!
-Sacha Baron Cohen as Pirelli was hilarious, and it was wonderful to see him switch from goofy to evil. Actually, it was wonderful to see him play someone evil in general. Not silly evil, but actually mean and scary. A+ darling!
Dislikes:
-I knew that cuts had to be made, but certain cuts made me sad. I missed the chorus parts in "Pirelli's Miracle Elixer" and "God That's Good". But mostly, I really missed "The Ballad of Sweeney Todd". I honestly think it could have worked in the film.
-Helena Bohnam Carter as Mrs. Lovett was perfect at times, and not enough for me at other times. She was mousey and it didn't always work. Plus, her words were so slurred at times that if I didn't know the story backwords, forwards and upside down I probably would have been confused.
-"A Little Priest": I was very sad that they cut all the jokes. Also, I think they were so desperate to de-Broadway the film that they took away a lot of the energy from this number.
In conclusion, I did enjoy it. I am going to see it again tonight with Mike, Pauly and some other friends. I will buy it on DVD and I have the soundtrack. However, to all my friends who do go see it, I would love to have you over to watch the 2 stage productions I have on DVD. The film has made me realize exactly how much I love the stage show. Angela Lansbury is still the best Mrs. Lovett
Mr. Burton, I wouldn't have trusted this story with anyone else. I give you a massive pat on the head.
