word. everyone wants to 'follow their bliss', but be able to feed themselves as well (and maybe buy a powerbook :) ). I think the fact that our generation is encouraged to go 'find yourself', find a passion, etc, does make us very lucky. That is a basic luxury that many people do not have.
speaking of luxuries, i am also the happy owner of a powerbook (grad present)... the conversion to Mac was pretty painless. especially since my mac is so shiny and cute!
i think part of the reason that phrase comes up at graduation is because walking across that stage immediately gives us more advantages to do what we want than people who don't make it that far. the nytimes has been running a story about class in the u.s. and just getting a bachelor's degree puts you ahead of 91% of the nation.
personally, my education puts me in the top fifth of our nation's class system while my salary puts me in the lower middle class region.
good words, ben...i think about that a lot, too... it seems like the way to make that advice true is to follow that buechner quote, which i'm sure you've heard, but here goes: God calls you to the place where your deep gladness and the world's deep hunger meet.
you know? go not only towards what you love and can do, but in a place/way where it fills something that is NEEDED.
I think we're both ignorant and lucky, but whatever our position is(globablly, economically), the point is to just move forward. I don't plan on really worrying about making a living for some time. I say we're young, we should be doing things that we would regret not doing (but still do some things that we may regret doing :)
Oh, and "uh, lucky" (in a Napoleon Dynamite tone) on the PowerBook! About time, huh?

it's a really interesting set of articles and interactive features, if you're looking for something to do.
