On the way to the grocery store, I passed a strange Santa statue on the side of the road...
What you can't see here is that his left arm is broken grotesquely. We will come back to him in a bit.
When I got to the grocery store, a local semi-independent (A Spartan Store, but just an affiliate, not owned by them), I knew something was up when I got to the bread aisle.
I took this shot after three people got out of the way. They turned out to be the manager and a couple who was shopping. I heard mumblings of Wallmart opening nearby recently and other financial woes. I became pretty certain that at issue was that the store would soon be closing.
That this was almost certainly the case was made more evident by egg section:
And the lower shelves of the yogurt and cheese sections:
Here, the aforementioned couple from the bread aisle is shopping what is left of the milk. There are 2 gallons of whole, no 2%, and quite a bit of lesser-known-brand 1/2% and Skim. It all expires this coming Wednesday:
I couldn't buy any cat food.
In the canned goods aisle, I overheard a stock person telling a shopper that they were indeed closing and that they had just gotten word this week. This is the canned good aisle:
At this point, taking pictures seemed silly. I already knew what was wrong. But It was still sad and amazing, but I took pictures of the frozen food
the bakery
and the meat section, which had at least been consolidated so that one cooler was empty and the other well stocked. Cows and pigs and sheep now lived together.
Finally, I cashed out and got out. I had to go back to see the weird santa on the way home though. He turned out to be getting our attention for a sale.
The sale is at a UPS self-storage company. Below, in this picture that my kid hopped out of the car to grab, you can see the bins of stuff they are selling. What kind of stuff? People's things. This was the stuff of people who couldn't pay their storage bills.
I would have gotten a close up of the stuff, but the guy running the sale was already looking at us weirdly.
But nothing was looking at us as weirdly as...
…the broken-armed Santa…
…who knows as we know…
…that the recession is NOT over.
Sleep tight.
