I think the new one-game wild card preliminary round of postseason play has broken me. I'm actually wearied by the idea that there are three more rounds of playoffs after this. Seriously ( Read more... )

I have mixed feelings about the infield fly play. On the one hand, it had been called by the umpire before (as nearly as I can tell) the infielder sheered off the ball in favor of the outfielder. On the other hand, the ball was WAY out of the infield, and was properly the outfielder's play (by geography, not to mention custom, with the outfielder, moving in to the play, typically getting precedence).

One thing it DOES suggest is that MLB has to have its ultimate arbiters available AT the games (or in the office, immediately reachable) in the event of a ruling being required.

I hate the idea of shortening any of the other series; I'd rather shorten the regular season back to 154 games to keep the World Series out of November (which game 7 would hit, this year).

You mean you DON'T want to see Damn Yankees played out in the World Series? :-)

I think Joe Torre was on call to adjudicate the protest very quickly. The Braves' protest was denied by day's end. dvdavins on FB informed me that infield flies are not subject to appeal, so the protest was the only recourse they had.

Better for everyone if it hadn't been called, I think, but the call isn't as completely egregious as it seemed at first sight. We need better umpires, is what we need.

Maybe the Infield fly Rule is the baseball equivalent of the parallel postulate - an awkwardly-phrased, non-intuitive rule that is necessary for the whole thing to work.

Does this mean there're non-Euclidean baseballs where the infield fly rule doesn't apply?

We got revenge for 1942 the very next year. Revenge for 1964 has been waitingt 48 long years! And you call that the least appetizing!? Well, yeah, maybe it is.

  1. Baseball in November, like hockey in June, is Wrong.
  2. I too would prefer graduated playoffs or at least back to best of 5 for the divisional series; the changes have all been in the direction of wring-more-money-from-TV make game "exciting" rather than championship baseball.
  3. The only mercy in this situation is that some of the divisional playoff games have to be played in the daytime.
  4. I am hoping the Yankees get hosed, even though this is probably Ichiro's only shot at a ring.
