Visitor from the States and Wulai visit number two    A friend of mine from the states is visiting me this week. I wanted to take him out of Taipei. I had originally wanted to go down to central Taiwan, to the Taroko Gorge - but I am running on an extremely tight budget right now, and so we settled on going to Wulai. Here are the pictures from

Hello, Andrew. I don't know if you remember me but this is Kim from Wisconsin. I came across this journal and I like it very much. I hope you don't mind that I added it to my list. Anyway, Do you know how often Japanese characters are borrowed from Chinese? I've only been taking Japanese for a semester, but I've recognized many characters here and in other pictures that i've seen that are in China. I only know one from the pictures here, though. In the picture of all the bus signs after the "100" is a character that in Japanese means origin. Is it the same thing in Chinese? I'm always afraid to say that I think that they mean the same thing because I'm afraid that I will be way off.

DUH, I remember you!

I think I heard one time that there are only about 2,000 characters in Japanese that were borrowed from Chinese. For the most part they carry the same meaning, but the one with the biggest difference that comes to my mind first is 私. In Chinese, it means "private" whereas in Japanese (as you know) it means "I".

The character after the 100 on the bus sign (元) can mean "origin" (as well as first, primary, and was the name of a dynasty) in Chinese, too, but it is most commonly used as "dollar". So "１００元" means 100 bucks.

This account I am using to reply is my regular journal, you should add that, too. It's a lot crazier and gives the actual story to what happens in Taiwan and not the happy G-Rated version I write for my family and relatives.

I do seem to have formed my own little style...that's sort of funny how that worked out.

I would not have been caught dead taking pictures of the scary old guys because one of them would have probably seen and then they would want to know what I was doing, and blah blah blah blah.
