Thailand    The last time I went to get my visa, they said (among other things) that because I went to Amsterdam for Christmas and missed a full week of classes, I was not taking my time here seriously and were not going to give me an extendable visa. So, it has already been sixty days since then, and it is time for me to go abroad and get another ( Read more... )

anybody i've ever heard of who spent any amount of time in thailand wants to go back, many want to go there to live permanently/for an extended period of time. kind of makes thailand sound like a really really awesome black hole...

It's way too much of a tourist trap for me ever to want to stay for any long period of time. But yeah, everyone I know loves it there.

I agree that it's too much of a tourist attraction for me to stay there long....I never like anything everyone else likes for long >_< But anyway, wahoo, Thailand! As usual, take tons of pictures and share them with us :) Have a safe trip!

I never understand why big establishments like Zoos and large public buildings cannot afford to get a decent translator. Like, they clearly just did that as a word for word translation.

Those are pretty good deals! And USD15-30 for a place to stay? Even better.

Exciting summer plans. You have had time to think about them though; in this regard, you are far ahead.

hah 無障礙坡道. [I figured out some bopomofo!] I don't know how they got 'disability' from 障礙 though. Bit odd. Oh, wait—they somehow found 'disability' as in something that was hindering/blocking one's progress as 'disability', whereas 障礙 is really just a physical obstacle/hinderance. ... As far as I can tell.

No penguins or dolphins though, at the zoo? =[

yeah, my classmate from thailand gave me lots of info and tips today, so i am feeling a little better about going, even though i have suddenly decided i really do not want to go.

i am talking my summer plans over with my academic advisor back in the states, we'll get it all worked out for the bestest

they had penguins, but by that time, i was ready to murder the taiwanese population. their concept of how to walk in a crowd and mine are TOTALLY different and it was driving me insane. they were also throwing leaves and stuff to the animals right next to giant signs saying "DO NOT FEED THE ANIMALS" and smoking next to no smoking signs. seemed very not-asian to me.

It's interesting to compare what they think is okay to ignore and what we think is okay to ignore. Their relationship with the environment is so weird. For some reason, I could see Taiwanese people doing what you said they were there, even though they in other cases wouldn't and that it doesn't follow the clean and obedient stereotype. And when I realized that I could see this, I started to wonder why this was.

I'm not sure if you've been in anybody's home there, but you might notice that they don't have this same distinction that rooms serve a purpose and that things should belong in a particular place. Plates, silverware, pots/pans will be kept in the kitchen, but some other things will just be stored in whatever place is convenient. This may be more my parents than the Taiwanese population in general. But their style of household management/organization drives me nuts.

Yeah, my friends and I were all so confused because it is very interesting how they pick and choose which things to obey. It seems when it is like a social situation they follow all the rules, but it comes to traffic and public places or something it is a little different. I don't know.

I have been in a few homes, and all of them were like these tremendous pack-rat havens. All sorts of things in every little space available. It was crazy.
