Ranting About America's Idiot President

Nov 03, 2004 11:31

This is supposed to be my journal about Taiwan, I know. It's just that I had a nightmare last night that I got the daylights beat out of me. I woke up feeling all weak and exhausted, and then I check the news only to see that gay-marriage is being banned in eleven more states and that Bush is winning so far ( Read more... )

Unfortunately, it seems that many of the referenda on banning gay marriage have passed in the 11 or states that had them today.

that letter is EXCELLENT.
for my part i'm most disturbed by the fact that people are writing discrimination into their state constitutions. people can have all the religious mandates they want and i won't give a damn... unless they try to force those on other people. most of the religious right doesn't seem to understand that allowing "gay marriage" (a troublesome term itself) doesn't infringe their rights, but banning it certainly infringes on the rights and happiness of others. and i thought christians were supposed to be charitable, understanding, and accepting. BULLSHIT. i also thought that discrimination was fucking illegal. freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of the press, no discriminating based on race, sex, gender, class... but discriminating based on sexual orientation is ok? c'mon folks.
sorry for the rant. i can't decide whether the possibility of bush being reelected or the banning of gay marriage makes me more irate. either way, it is not a good night.

i'm tempted to have a mass exodus. everybody with sense should leave the states and let them collapse in on themselves. or maybe make all the people without sense go live in the south and let that collapse in on itself. either way.
if bush wins i'm seriously going to consider moving to canada. or india.

i thought about leaving the country - but we cant. if everyone with a decent mind leaves, then this country will end up blowing the world up.

i'm impressed. i'm far more selfish in thinking that i can't/won't stay in a country where half the people and almost the entire government have views in direct opposition to mine, with the power to restrict my rights and freedoms.
in case you hadn't heard, kerry conceded. my faith in humanity has gone down the toilet.

Listen, it isn't fair to immediately link feminism with not having a sense of humor, but I'm not going to get into that with you here because it isn't the original topic and I don't intend to clutter up this journal with a long discussion (though I'm not adverse to continuing the discussion; just not here). Though I'm almost certain the person whose journal this is wasn't offended as I'm just as sure he knows you and knows also that you were being sarcastic (which I considered, before I posted) it just didn't seem particularly funny considering the tone of the original post.

Okay as you (Andrew and some others) know, I have difficultly responding to this type of post because... I'm not sure, maybe because its emotional. But to add my two cents (euros?) is that although I am throughrouly against the amendments being passed for state constitutions, what worries me on a larger scale is the cultural climate this helps to sustain. If (when?) Bush is reelected, this only sets the stage for more acceptance (and of course a huge, possibly victorious backlash) of the move to amend the Constitution to define what marriage is on a national level. (I will not get into the issue of civil union, and my dislike of marriage since this is just a comment haha). Not only does this deny a right to individuals and a minority group, but it also has larger implications -- first of all, it is a restrictive rather than right-baring amendment, which obviously threatens civil rights of all citizens, whether it directly effects them or not. Second, it brings in to national law a definition of "marriage" which traditionally has ( ... )

I was just talking to that Canadian guy. He was telling me how much he loves America because they have such great ideas, and like all the great social change groups or something are based in America. But he also said he can't stand America because the government slash maybe society is designed in a way that those ideas can never be implemented without a middle-aged rich white guy to voice them. He said a lot more than that, and a lot more eloquently, but that was the gist of it. I am sure I will be able to explain to you a lot more clearly what his views are after tomorrow night because I am going to his place for dinner then we are going to the hot springs/spa ( ... )

Haha appropriate use of the "i smoke french cigarettes and read sartre" icon. My friend and I went out for a drink after class due to the US election results. The conversation went like this: "I shouldn't have gone to class, I should have spent my last €2.50 on a cheap bottle of wine and passed out in my bed." "I could pass out without the bottle of wine." "Yes but I feel like I deserve some sort of consellation prize." "We should go get a drink after class to... un-celebrate the outcome." "Un-celebrate... you mean like to MOURN?" It was funny. You should have been there.

hahahaha, that sounds great because "un-celebreate" sounds like something I would say not knowing what the proper word to use would be
