I realize it's the internet.

But fucking stop America-bashing, you fucking bigots. Seriously. Criticize our government all you want, discuss with us our problems, but don't forget we're all human fucking beings just like you. We eat, drink, sleep, excrete, and fuck. We learn, we work, we have families, we get old and we die.

Same goes for all you Americans who think our ( Read more... )

...you're welcome?

But yeah, my grandfather made a rather similar remark about how we should just stop buying from China. I bit my tongue so I wouldn't deliver a lecture on international economics in general. It just makes me mad when people don't really stop and just...consider things, I guess.

In other, completely random news, today I learned that 7 American dies annually from exotic spider bites in the supermarket (exotic spiders hiding in produce). I love my health class soooo much. XD

I don't mind if people think we shouldn't buy from China. There are legitimate consumer safety issues that have come up lately and China has major human rights problems. I get that, but demonizing the Chinese people is just... well it's ridiculous and stupid.

On your tangent, this guy who worked in a pub near where I used to live got killed by a poisonous spider in a crate of bananas.

you'v never done factory work i'm guessing? i can see why some peole would feel that way about china not because they 'steal jobs' more so because their bussness can eventualy by out american companies due to their 'cost effective' labor.

9/11 was diffrent for New Yorkers. you would probably have ishues if an integral part of your home city or you favorat army base and it's people were killed in such a unexpected fashion.

"Issues" aren't an excuse for wishing death on innocent people. And I do know what it is to have bombs lobbed at me. Where I was stationed in Iraq, we got mortared nearly every day, and people did die. I still managed to take care of patients on both sides of the conflict, even when I was beyond angry, so I won't apologize to holding others to the same standard.

As for the racism, well, there's a difference between saying "I'm concerned about our economy because of China's competition" and "those damn chinks are stealing our jobs." A HUGE difference. Anyone is welcome to say, you know, we have a problem with the global economy the way it is.

When I get offended is when people act like a whole group of people they don't even know is "the enemy" and therefore bad, so it's okay to dehumanize them, kill them, rape them, torture them. As if the world is just black and white. As if there's any such thing as "the good guys" and "the bad guys." At best it's an intellectual oversimplification, at worst it's the root cause of unimaginable ( ... )

I'm sorry you're feeling discouraged - I'd love to have a nice long discussion with you about this.

I was going to post, but looking at the post above mine...well I am pretty damn sure that if I post at this moment I'm gonna start some sort of comment battle, and I'd like to avoid that.

Suffice it to say I understand what you are saying completely and sympathize.

And no matter how badly you've been hurt, it is NEVER OKAY to wish death and destruction on the innocent civilians of an oppressive regime. They are just as victimized as anyone their government attacks, more so because what we see as a terrible, tragic event is *a way of life for them*.

The ability to see the difference? That's what makes us GOOD. The refusal to EVER see the difference? Then we emulate that which we claim to despise.

I'll stop now.

I don't know as much as I should about the day-to-day facts of what's going on in the world, but partly that's because I get too cynical and depressed if I watch the news... my point is, though, that none of it really matters. Details are less important than themes, you know? I know this is the truth, absolute, deep-down and powerful. You don't need to be a history major to see the trend, you don't need to be a politics nerd to see it's still happening now. I learned the phrase "Machean paranoia" on The Daily Show and I was so pleased because it described this phenomenon I've been noticing since I was a child in two simple words, legitimized it, so to speak.

Anyway.Today I think I might get drunk and happy, because I'm in a mood that could go either way, and I'd rather forget about all this for a bit and have some fun. Thanks for the comment. You (and Karen) should come hang out for a weekend this summer, we could hang out and talk about stuff. It'd be great :)

Yes we should...and probably will. Once I figure out what my life looks like this summer, I will be sure to let you (and the A-Train) know. :)
