Theater.

Selphie was dancing wildly on the stage, the other dancers had a hard time keeping up with her. Around Quistis people were applauding, some even waving banners. The play had become quite a hit and this was already its twelfth performance at Deling.

Miss Tilmitt had become quite the star.

“Isn’t it great?” Irvine smiled broadly at her, his new coat lying on his lap. Quistis could hardly tell the difference with the one he used to wear before, but earlier that evening he had pointed out that it was a darker shade of brown, and that the buttons were cooler.

She just nodded, watching the people on stage now leap up and fall down like dying swans.

Art, they called this.

It was ridiculous.

“I’m surprised Selphie only needed to ask you four times before you came.”

Quistis tried to smile. “I like theatre.” She didn’t want Selphie to think that she hated it.

Their friend disappeared from stage for a few moments, while the dancers pretended to crawl out of their graves.

Selphie jumped back on stage again, trying to avoid their hands as she darted around. The dress she wore now showed even more cleavage. Irvine catcalled and stood up to applaud.

“Am going to the ladies room,” Quistis said.

Irvine sat down again to let her pass. “Be back quickly, the best part is about to start!”

She made her way past enthusiastic fans and a couple who were writing in a notebook. Perhaps journalists. She frowned. Unlike the general public, they had been less than enthusiastic about the play.

The moment she closed the door of the big hall behind her, she sighed relieved and looked up for a sign to guide her to the bathroom. All she needed was a bit of water and she could go right back again.

“Like the show?”

She turned around, startled at the familiar voice. “Seifer!”

“Yeah, it’s me,” he said easily.

“What are you doing here?” She adjusted her glasses, almost like she thought she might be seeing things.

“Heard too much stuff about how well she’s doing. Had to see it with my own eyes.”

Quistis frowned. “Is that it?”

“Why?” He looked down at her. “What else could there be?”

“Well… your record is less than stellar, Seifer.”

“That again,” he said. “Will you still bring this up when we’re in an old folks home?”

“It’s hardly ancient history.” Quistis looked at him. He was still acting all cool, the smile was still smug. Still, there were things now that she remembered that she had forgotten before. They had all known each other as children… but Seifer was the only one they had cast out.

“Perhaps you can wait for the play to be finished,” she said therefore. “And congratulate Selphie, she would like that.”

He let out a short laugh. “Do you think so?”

“I do,” she said. “Out of all of us, Selphie is the most forgiving.”

“The only one then.”

Quistis looked at him coldly. “Yes, probably.”

Seifer let two older ladies pass him by. “How are classes, instructor?”

“You know I’m not that anymore. Your attempt to pay me back is too obvious.”

“That was not my intention.” He smirked. “It’s funny though. I’m not welcome anymore, but you’re kind of a fifth wheel as well.”

“I do not care for that. I just want to be a good SeeD.”

“Lovely ambitions,” Seifer held up his hand right above her head. “High aims.”

It was clear that he meant to rattle her. It was working, but she didn’t want him to know that.

“At least I’m not fishing my days away.”

“Disrespecting hard work?” he asked. “Getting food and selling it is a lot more useful than what you SeeDs are doing.”

“Selling it.” She snorted. “Like they can’t fish for themselves at Fisherman’s Horizon.”

Seifer grinned and Quistis wondered at herself. Hadn’t she been planning to go to the bathroom? How had she ended up in this verbal battle with Seifer Almasy?

“Well, if you don’t believe me, come and have a look,” he said.

“No thanks,” she replied.

He straightened himself and started heading for the exit. “Well, you know where to find me if you change your mind.”

“What about Selphie?” she called after him.

“Dunno, just tell her…” and he began to smirk again. “Tell her I like her performance about as much as you do.”
