Picnic at Mount Ordeals

Kain had heard their quick footsteps from a mile away. The sound was entirely different from those of all the monsters that had made this mountain their home.

He watched as a nasty-looking bird attacked. Palom struck it with his magic, while Porom threw up barriers against its attacks. It tried to find some holding, but Palom set his feathers ablaze with a well-aimed fire-spell. With a shriek, it tumbled over the edge.

Kain jumped down, landing in front of them.

“Ah, there you are,” Porom said, as she cleaned off some dust from her pants.

“What is it?” Kain asked. “Is something wrong at Mysidia?”

“Nah,” Palom let out.

“Then…why?”

Porom took of the bag that had been dangling from her shoulder. She zipped it open and rummaged through it, finding a dark-blue blanket.

Palom blasted a rock out of the way, earning a disapproving glare from his sister. “You know you shouldn’t use magic for tasks you can do with your hands!”

“Yeah, yeah, got the juice?”

“It’s in your bag,” Porom said, spreading the blanket and laying it down.

“What are you doing here?” Kain said.

“We’re here to have lunch with you,” Porom said cheerfully.

“You’re…what?”

“Sit down, man!” Palom had found his bottle with juice. “I’m starving.”

Kain watched the strange little scene in front of him. He hadn’t seen a human for several weeks, and now these… -kids- wanted to have lunch with him!?

“Now, Mr. Kain, please sit down. I prepared the whole morning.”

He gaped for another second, then slowly laid down his lance. “It’s dangerous here.”

“We can take care of ourselves,” Palom said curtly. Then his eyes lit up. “Are those strawberry-cakes?”

“You can only eat two of them!” Porom warned. “Mr. Kain needs to eat well.”

Finally Kain sat down, allowed her to pile his plate full with little cakes. He took off his helmet and lay it down on the blanket.

Palom had put the bottle of juice to his mouth and Porom was looking at Kain like he was the kid that still needed to learn how to eat. “Go on,” she said, pushing the plate towards him. “It’s really good.”

He took the little fork she had placed there and took a small bite. It had been a long time since he had eaten anything that sweet. Both Rosa and Cecil liked sweet things, but even when he had been a child, he had mostly avoided it.

“And?” Porom asked after he had swallowed.

“Not bad,” he lied, and then gestured at the piece of bread she had taken with her. “What’s that?”

“Take a bit.” She grabbed the bottle from Palom’s hands. “And have some juice.”

A little fearful that the bread would be as sweet as the cake, Kain was pleasantly surprised to find it tasting very well. Had bread ever been this good or had it just been too long since he last had some?

Palom jumped up, cake still stuffed in his mouth as he uttered a spell. A rain of fire fell over the edge. “Monster,” he said. “Was trying to steal our food.”

Kain decided not to point out that the four-eyed creature preferred human flesh to almost every other type of food.

Porom poured him some more juice as Palom wandered of to his cave. A few seconds later smoke appeared.

“Palom!” Porom ran to the cave, pulling out her brother. “You burned down his cot!”

Kain closed his eyes and took another bite. Wasn’t he here to learn how to control his dark side?

“I was just trying to make some light, I can’t help it’s so dark here!”

Palom ran out of the cave, chased by his sister, who then tripped over Kain’s lance.

“Oops! Sorry!”

When Palom reached the blanket again, he put his hand in his side and stared at Kain. “What’s with the beard?”

“Quiet!” Porom slapped her brother’s arm. “Don’t be so rude!”

“I use my lance to shave,” Kain said. “It doesn’t work as well as razors.”

“Then let me!”

A few words and suddenly flames were licking at his face. Kain screamed and jumped up, hitting his cheek with his hand. “PALOM!!!!”

“Was just trying to help, geez!”

The flame disappeared, but his skin was still raw… on one side.

“I’m really sorry,” Porom said. “He’s been practicing his fire-spells lately… thinks he has a special talent for it.”

Palom was trying to hold his laughter. Kain knew he had to look ridiculous, with a burned beard at one side.

“That’s great.” Kain got up. “But don’t use me as a target, understood?”

Porom started to clean up the dishes, getting Palom’s help with a water-spell. Kain handed them plates now and then. They weren’t bad kids, but it sure was tiring to be around them for so long. Especially since he wasn’t used to socializing anymore.

Once they were finished, Porom made a little bow.

“Sorry, about the cot.” Palom glanced at his face. “And the beard.”

“Don’t worry about it,” Kain said, even though he wasn’t looking forward to sleeping on the cold rock of the cave.

“I hope you enjoyed the food.”

He smiled a little; he didn’t want to hurt their feelings. “It was really good, thanks.”

“Good.” Porom smiled happily at him.

Palom waved. “See ya next week!”

Kain opened his mouth and then closed it again. Maybe he should find a place to live that was a little further away from Mysidia.
