Nightly visitor
“What a day!”
Reno stretched and was about to put his feet on the antique table, muddy boots and all.
Rufus stared. His feet landed on the floor.
“Can’t you make us do the investigation when it stops raining?” Reno asked.
Rufus poured himself a drink, back towards him now. “Any results?”
“Nothing, sir,” Reno wished he had a towel, so he could at least dry his hair.
The president sat down behind the desk, a little away from the couch that Reno was sitting on.
“So, eh… why did you make me come here?”
“I wished to know your opinion,” Rufus said, starting his computer.
“Me? On what?”
“Slum upgrading.”
“Ah…” Reno sat back. “And you ask me because I used to live in one?”
“Exactly.” Rufus was now typing away on his computer. “Attempts have been made before, even at Midgar for a little while. However, city-planners who know only how to create business-districts messed up completely.”
“How about Reeve?” Reno asked. “I mean, I know little of city-planning.”
“Of course, but you could point out mistakes that are not obvious to him.”
Reno nodded and watched his president type for a while. He looked tired, had been looking tired for months now. No wonder, he had been working on things Reno couldn’t even imagine. From prosecuting those who traded in slaves to the organization of ancient festivals and now slum upgrading.
“Shouldn’t you go rest now?”
Rufus looked at him, almost surprised that he was still there. “Of course not. This has to be finished by morning.”
“Can’t you let Tseng take over? Or Reeve? Or just hire a few more clerks?”
“Tseng and Reeve have other duties,” Rufus said curtly. “And since when did you think that it was okay to comment on my schedule?”
Reno ignored the danger signs; the sharp look he had gotten, the tensed up muscles.
“Look,” he said, getting up and walking over. He took the first paper from the enormous pile on Rufus’ desk. “This, for example; reparation payment to residents in Coral… I mean… why are we even paying them?”
“You wouldn’t understand.”
“Somebody else could do this,” Reno said simply.
“This is what it will take for Shinra to believable again,” Rufus said. “I can not leave this work to others.”
“Believable?” Reno frowned. “Sir, are we building up Shinra to pay our debts to society… or is that just a front?”
“Does it matter?” Rufus asked. “In both cases we need them to trust us.”
“You’re right, it doesn’t matter. We will follow you in any case, sir,” Reno said. “But we can’t follow a dead man.”
Rufus gave him a long look. Reno tried to keep his face passive, but it was a hard thing to do with those steel, blue eyes focused on him. Then he turned back to his keyboard. “I need to finish this.”
For a few seconds, Reno watched him work on, then he ducked under the desk. Before Rufus could even say something, he had pulled the plug. The screen turned black and Rufus jumped up, anger sparkling in his eyes. “You’re fired.”
“Sir, the Turks are trained to follow whatever command a superior gives us.” Reno crossed his arms. “But the very first thing we learned is that we must protect the president. This goes above all other things.”
“Really?” Rufus stepped even closer, scrutinizing him. “ I shall write a memo this evening to change that right away. It would give the Turks power to do what you want with my safety as excuse.”
“To do what we want...” Reno hadn’t stepped back, but found it increasingly difficult to stay emotionless. Rufus was standing awfully close, his breath tickling his cheek. “I wouldn’t dare.”
Rufus watched him for a while, almost like he began to realize something. Reno startled when he brought his lips near his ear and whispered: “What do you want, Reno?”
Though Reno tried to control his breathing, it was still going faster than normal. How could it not?
“I want…” He almost brought his hand up.
He gasped when two pale fingers moved through his wet hair. “Don’t Turks always take what they want?”
For moments Reno just looked at him, as Rufus kept playing with his red locks. Rufus raised his eyebrows, looking almost confused. “You don’t want me?”
Reno crushed his lips against those of the president, pulling him closer. Rufus responded in kind, pressing up against him as he kissed back. His warm body heated Reno up for the first time that day.
Rufus’ hands slid under his shirt, teasing the skin of his back. He moaned and pressed closer against him, pushing Rufus against the desk.
He broke the kiss and started unbuttoning the other man’s shirt. Reno glanced up, afraid to be send away if Rufus realized what they were doing. The blond man just looked at him, cheeks slightly flushed.
“Hurry,” he commanded.
Reno enjoyed seeing his president like that, wanting him. His lips moved over Rufus’ chest, licked at a nipple, before moving on to his neck. Rufus moved to sit on the desk as Reno began to suck his neck. A hand was in his hair now, soft sounds coming from lips that had slightly swollen from the kissing.
He was getting impatient now and shifted him even further backwards.
Something crashed to the floor and startled, Reno got up. Rufus stared down at the floor, at his broken keyboard.
Reno bit his lip. “Was that…?”
“New prototype, yes,” Rufus said.
“Is it… eh… expensive?”
Rufus let go of him. “Worth about as much as your salary… of the next couple of decades.”
“Shit!” Reno stepped back, looking down at the floor. How could he have been so stupid? And why did that have to happen right when he was making out with Rufus Shinra? He might as well forget about that now.
“What is it?” Rufus asked, standing on his feet again. His shirt was still open and Reno tried not to look at the red spots that he had made on his skin.
“… I’m sorry, sir.”
Rufus threw him a contemptuous smile. “So you lost your nerve.”
He remained silent, at a loss for words for once.
“I see.” Rufus threw him a cold look. “You can leave now.”
Reno nodded, feeling miserable. He started heading for the exit of the room.
Right when he was about to walk out when Rufus’ voice sounded. “You are still fired. There’s no place for cowards in Shinra.”
Reno whirled around. “But sir…!”
“Be glad I don’t make you pay for it.” Rufus took up the broken keyboard and laid it down on his desk. “Close the door behind you.”
